lost Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 what would be some interesting project ideas? professor told us a bunch of us to come up with a proposal for an idea. i was thinking about making a super computer. would it be a super computer if i raided as many SSDs as i could with some kinda server motherboard running 2 cpus (like 2 quad cores and etc). professor hinted that the budget can be around 15k to even 20k. If its compsci, i still wouldnt use that.. how about running gtx285s against some many cpu xenon server to see which one performs better in certain tasks? you know, the whole programming for gpus thing? i dunno. That's not a project, that's a shopping list. If I can rant for just a little bit... For my senior design (Comp Eng / Comp Sci) all the professors pushed the teams to make robots that navigated mazes. All the teams went online, ordered the kit, followed step-by-step instructions to build it, and learned exactly nothing but how to complete a PayPal transaction. My team developed a navigation system for the visually impaired using wireless network access points and signal strengths to determine location. Needless to say, we stood out among the crowd. It's stuff like this that sets your degree apart from others. Everybody in the industry has a degree. This is a chance to get something big on your resume and generate talking points in job interviews. I suggest making it count. Build a load and test the efficiency, power factor, etc. Look into new technologies that are on the horizon and try to suggest ways to reduce power consumption. It's something that would let you get very technical and hands-on but still stay in the PC field that you're obviously very interested in.
