New Core i7 build. Need some heatsink advice.

Recommended Posts

I'm building up a Core i7 for a friend and having some doubts as to whether the CNPS9700 will fit in the case I've chosen. Here is the build so far:

Lian Li case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16811112154

Corsair PSU http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139006

EVGA mobo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813188039

Intel Core i7 920 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115202

Either this Cooler Master heatsink http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835103055

or this Zalman one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16835118019

OCZ DDR3 1600 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820227381

A pair of 9800GTX cards http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130339

this hard drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16822136320

and this monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824254035

I'm confident in the build, but the heatsinks are getting so damn big at this point, I'm not sure whether either of those will fit in the case. Anybody had any experience with either of the above mentioned monsters? I love the Zalman stuff, but the Cooler Master is getting good reviews, and since the guy is a car nut, I thought he'd get a kick out of having a V8 sticking off his mobo.

don't go with SLI when you build a system... reserve it for when you want an upgrade. when you build it, go for the single best GPU you can afford and upgrade from there.

This card is a hundred bucks less than you were going to spend and would probably be better than the 9800s you suggested.

also, go for the Coolermaster heatsink over the zalman, it'd definitely be better.

The Zalman fan wont have any troubles fitting into that case. I myself have a zalman heatsink almost identical to that and a mid-tower; it fits fine in it even with a side fan.

Not too sure about the Coolermaster one though, it is a little bigger then the zalman (3cm if I read it properly..) so you -may- run into some trouble..

Probably need a comment or look at some reviews for the Coolermaster one >.>

instead of the 9800 gtx's I would get a gtx 295. If your looking for the ultimant in graphic card performance. thats the one. and plus you will not ever have to upgrade for at least 2 years or more.

He is getting a 22" monitor, GTX295=overkill. Anyways, I have seen the GTX 260's going very low in prices, I mean you can get an XFX GTX260 Black Edition for $230, $200 after MIR. Rather get one of those as they perform better than 9800GTX+'s and then he won't have to deal with SLI problems :)

Yes stay away from SLI, get the best single card you can afford. If your going for bang for the buck then the GTX 260 is about as good as it gets.

MSI OC'd version for $160AR or XFX for $170AR with free 4GB usb drive, Either of these by themself will blow up anything at 1680x1050

Also you can get a better HD for a like $5 more
