I just got a computer from a friend to work on, and it for sure has a keylogger. Being a school computer though, I can't install some secrurity applications. It only has one account, and the type is unknown. So some stuff is allowed, some is not.

Anyhow, does anyone know how to get it to be an admin account? I got to leave soon, so I'm trying to get to the point, lol. I can't even enter safe mode because msconfig is denied.

Thanks!

Tap the F8 key when windows boots and you'll get some boot options, just chose safe mode from that menu.

As far as getting into the admin account from there thats up to you, be it using the default password or your schools admin password.

Download and run the "Ultimate Boot CD" and change the account type and password so you can gain access to the admin account.

If this computer is school property, the school should have some sort of Information Technology staff member(s) taking care of that issue.

The safe mode worked with F8 Andrew, but I still couldn't do anything due to the account restrictions.

I did download and get a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD going, but I'm not finding an area to make a admin account? Maybe I'm missing it, lol. Any help on this one?

The computer is a college computer, and is loaned to a girl that is in high school as a senior. So she can't take it to the University and get it taken care of, it's a bit of a distance away, lol. But I did get Spybot working on my flash drive, and it found a good amount of things. Stupidly though, you have to also have admin rights to fix any problems.

Change the ADMIN password.

THIS DOES WORK IN VISTA AND XP

Go to CMD:

Net user administrator *

If the admin acount isn't administrator type

Net user /all This will give you a list of users.

If that doesn't work you can try this.

Note: I've only ever done this through a .bat file what it does is makes it so the next time an admin logs in it will create an account for you. I've skipped everything except the command which may or may not work. I've never tried it straight through CMD.

THIS WILL NOT WORK IN VISTA

Try opening the CMD and typing:
net localgroup administrators username /add

Good luck

You can download a tool named "OPHcrack". Its a live cd that tells you all of the usernames and passwords on the computer. Works like a charm.

Gah, thanks for the replies taco and johnston, but I have already given the computer back. I was able to remove some things, amazingly, despite the account usage. But it wasn't enough, I can tell, lol. The computer still has the keylogger on it.

I pretty much said to take the computer back to the University, and have them work on it, as I couldn't get around their limited account type.

Thank you again everyone. :P
