The Smith Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) Introduction: I wanted to see if I could not get any better cooling on the GTX260. since I didn't have any heatsink that would fit on it, I thought I would simply replace the fan. So I ordered a Vantec Tornado 92mm from Newegg. Procedure: Results: At load, I was able to reduce the GPU temperature of 6 degrees Celcius over the stock fan @ 100%. That is 48C instead of 54C, when folding. The PC is now 10x noisier. Conclusion: It's not worth it. <_< I wasted a few tie-wraps. I'll replace the shroud on the card right after this post. However I'm really happy with the Tornado, I'm looking forward to other mods using it. Edited January 27, 2009 by The Smith

Kuronin Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Aren't you using up like 6 PCI slots?
The Smith Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 well yea.. those things are louder than all hell Yeah I think I'll find a way to regulate it, because, as I said earlier, I will use it in other mods. Obviously I can't keep this noise level at its maximum all day long, I'll get crazy. Aren't you using up like 6 PCI slots? Four, to be exact. ekiM Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Smith, oh Smith... 6C is quite an impressive drop, but this is simply impractical, my friend! Perhaps you could devise a shroud to use in conjunction with the Tornado so the fan could be mounted somewhere else that doesn't take up so many PCI-e slots.... this mod could prove to be quite useful with EVGA's upcoming Voltage Tuner! The Smith Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 (edited) Smith, oh Smith... 6C is quite an impressive drop Well, yeah you're right. What I wanted to say is that it is not as much as I expected. I has hoping for numbers similar in the Musashi review... I has hoping for numbers similar in the Musashi review... You could put one of those 92mm Silenx fans on there, it won't have as high a CFM but they make the quietest fans around. I really hope that more coolers come out for the 260, though mine runs cool enough now.
ccokeman Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 well yea.. those things are louder than all hell Thats an understatement. When used with a decent fan controller you can slow them down so the noise is not to bad. Just under 3000 RPM the get quite bearable. anthony Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 Strapping on fans typically isn't worth it, you would need a better heatsink first
The Smith Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 you would need a better heatsink first That's what I would have wanted to do, but I had no heatsink that fitted on it...
