Is It Really That Easy??

Ok, so today was the first time I've ever overclocked a cpu. My specs are in my sig. I just can't believe its that easy. All I did was go into the AI Tweaking section, change it to manual from auto and changed the BCLK from 133 (2.67G) to 160 (3.28G). This 20% overclock was achieved with a single tweak with everything else left on auto. It automatically set the DRAM to 480 or so own its own. I booted it up and its been stable all day today. I ran a stress test with prime 95, but temps started creeping up so I stopped it after about 15 mins when temps were getting into the 70's. I still have the stock air cooler and my temps, according to CoreTemp are 39-40 degrees at idle and under balls-to-the-wall COD4, temps never hit above 54. SO...2 questions:

1) Is it really that easy? When things go this smooth, I worry that i might have missed something, even though I did what I've read online in a few spots.

2) Is the stock air cooler ok for this mild overclock, or should I cut it back to, lets say 2.8ghz, til I get a good air cooler. It seems to be ok, but like I said, a few minutes into prime 95 and temps sky-rocket. I'm a pure air cooler guy...hence the Coolermaster Cosmo with 6 fans, and will be getting a aftermarket cooler (dont know which one yet). but will this sufice for a few weeks?

I attahced my cpu-z reading with prime on.

Thanks

I had a hard time believing it the first time I overclocked, today's technology makes it simple for us newbies.

Those are some nice results you have though. Mild overclock on low voltages, good job!

Many reviews have talked that it is easy to OC with this one... I'm sure you can push more on that volts...

but if you have no use of higher clocks there wont be a point since OCing further even without bumping the voltage can still increase the temps (of CPU and NB)...

Although I have not witnessed myself, seems Core i7 + X58 runs very hot... I personally am not comfortable with temp >65C even for benching (I feel that it can degrade the performance of cores.. just a feeling :) ), lot of ppl here would say that it does not matter since the proc will only heat up when you bench...

Its pretty easy, I am doing 3.8Ghz with one of my i7s with just a slight vcore increase...

How many I7's you running?

And Sandwhich yep it is that easy. Now you can get into modding things :D

1. yep, my first overclock was with my e8400 and I went from 3.0GHz to 3.6GHz in one step. but to get above that, it took a little work.

2. generally no, If under full load your temps get above 65C or so, it's time to better the cooling. and by the way, a 20% overclock is not a "mild" overclock. It may seem like that when you see people boasting about about 4.2GHz or 4.5, but in reality, those are considered extreme overclocks. A mild overclock, I would say, would be up to about 10%. Yours is a pretty decent O/C.

Well, thanks guys, I feel a bit better about whats going on haha. I am a new to overclocking. I guess I just made it out ot be some kind of extremely technical science, even though I do consider myself above average technically, This board and cpu overclock easily and well for the money. Im soooo glad I didnt fork out the extra for the 940.

I think I'll still probably cut the OC back some, due to the stock air cooler. Im getting a new one in a week or so and dont wanna risk tearing up my cores.

Ilove my case though, man, my idle temps are 35 and only reach around 52 during games. That will have to sufice til I get my aftermarket cooler.

hmmmm, anyone know any good ones. I like the Thermaltake, Vigor Monsoon, and Asus Triton... anyone have any favorites?

not that i'm an expert on anything but i've sorta gotten used running my machines at max fsb (i.e. 1600fsb on this one) and then anything above that that i call extreme overclocking...i haven't been able to stabilize this cpu at much above 1600 without going to dangerous vcores and temps so i personally don't consider it extremely oc'd...imo...it takes alot more time and patience and experience to get solid extreme overclocks :withstupid:

for me it depends on what you're overclocking. my first core2 went from 2.0 to 3.4 which is a 70% overclock. great value for money, but not a particularly extreme overclock because allendales typically overclock well.

yep tru dat...hardware choices make a big difference in oc's too...!!

looks like you still have turbo boost on. if you take it up much more you might want to turn that off untill you get everything stable.. I took my i7 to 4ghz (without turbo boost), there was a guide posted somewhere about how to oc the 920 to 4ghz that worked pretty well for me, I DL'ed the PDF but its at home. I still need to go back and see if I can drop the voltages a bit more, but have been too lazy :) my temps at full load (prime95) get a bit hot (just under 70c, Liquid cooled) but gaming and stuff it stays around 45c so I havent been too worried. All in all I found it very easy to get a decent OC out of.
