bg8780 Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I noticed between the 920/940 vs the 965 extreme the QPI's are different rated speeds. Would overclocking a 920 to 3.2ghz (same core clock as 965) achieve the same speed and performance? or is the 920 always stuck at 4.8gt/s and cant achieve the speed of the 965? Thanks! xly15 Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 That is the speed of the QPI link. That never changes. They did that so there was a difference in the cpu models besides clock speeds. Hope that clears that up.
bg8780 Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 so in short for the speed of 6.4gbt/s there is no substitute for the 965 extreme?
IVIYTH0S Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 so in short for the speed of 6.4gbt/s there is no substitute for the 965 extreme? ya the QPI is like the new form of FSB, it's a hardware difference.
Sandwich Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 The articles Ive read show the OC920 holding its own against the stock i7 extreme. The difference in QPI has not been tapped yet, but could show substabtial gains in the future. Its such new hardware, I havent really read any article saying that the differnce is worth the $800 price difference. I'll see if I can fine that article and will post the link. TheScavenger Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 I can't imagine a 6.4 QPI is going to show any noticeable differences in real world benchmarks over a 4.8 QPI. A 4.8QPI already provides more than enough memory bandwidth for the average enthusiast.
ccokeman Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 When you overclock the baseclock the QPI speed increases as well. Its easy to see when you are in the BIOS. There have to be some limits on the chips to make that point of difference.
madu Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Doesn't increasing the BLCK automatically increase the QPI? I thought you need to change the QPI from 4.8 to 6.4 in bios in order to OC a 920/940?
ccokeman Posted January 13, 2009 Posted January 13, 2009 Default on the 920 is 4.8G/T and can only be increased by ocing the bclock. the 940 has both 4.8 and 5.8g/t .
bg8780 Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 Thanks for the replies guys!
Sandwich Posted January 14, 2009 Posted January 14, 2009 hey cokeman, thats exactly what I thought, man there must be a difference in the 2 chips , but really, from what Ive read is that it is actually the same chip, just one the clock multiplyer is unlocked(the extreme) and the QPI difference. I went with the 920, cause the equivalent speed and up to 3.9ghz speeds have been achieved by OC the 920. I didnt find the $1000 tag to be worht it at all. therapsody Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Don't be tempted much folks)), 6.4gt/s gives 30% performance increase in average compared to 4.8gt/s
