Windows Xp > Vista Shortcut Incompatabilities? *update*

Recommended Posts

thanks ned, i thought the same thing

I might just try my idea first, if worse comes to worst i still have a copy of XP here and i can always reformat both discs if worse comes to the absolute worst lol

Yea most things should work if they were wrote for xp but there will be software that has been designed with vista in mind so they will most likey need to be reinstalled, although things can be run in compatibility mode

I'd uninstall any games that have securom on them so that you dont lose any activations

Copying games from OS to OS has always been touchy. Worst case you just have to reinstall over the top of the old ones and you can keep all your settings/saved games and such.

It's not free, it's pirated. Just hope whoever you downloaded it from didn't hide a few surprises in there for you. And 7 isn't even that different from Vista. I bet you would say the same things about Windows Mojave. =/

http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.p...15&hl=rules

Section 1, Part 6:

Absolutely NO piracy/warez links, requests, discussions, or suggestions. Don't even hint around about it. This includes cracks, serial numbers, download links, etc. The same goes for pornographic material, drugs, or any other illegal activities. - OverclockersClub will not be held responsible for your actions.

I suggest you fix your post, and i'll edit the quote of it and erase I mentioned it. I don't know if your post crosses the line, but I just figured i'd mention it.

OP: Like waco said, the best bet is to reinstall the games. You may be able to copy the folder and if there is an uninstall utility within that folder, you may be able to use that and instead of uninstalling, choose the option for "Repair" if it's there. that should add in all the registry keys and values that are needed to actually run the game.

Ok so i installed the new mobo, set my old XP hdd to secondary and installed vista on the new one

So far everything except COD4 and spore have worked perfectly by just simply creating a shortcut from the exe on the other harddrive

Some programs work straight away, others do a little mini registry install automatically, CSS prompted me to install steam, it auto downloaded the setup file

So far everything is going great the only things ive needed to reinstall were a few drivers (setpoint for my G9) and my printer to get vista x64 versions and the 2 games i listed above :D

much less work and hassle than i anticipated
