kup22r Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 hey all. i have run into a problem now that i am home from school for the holidays. you see, my laptop contains my important files/media, however, i prefer to use my family computer for games and everyday use. i could just copy some of my files over to my family pc, but that just a pain and the hd is small anyway. what is the best way to share these files with my pc? i'm looking for something that's not a hastle and i only have to set up once. also, it needs to be fast enough where i can listen to a sound file (located on the laptop) on my pc w/out having it get choppy. ClayMeow Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 there's several ways to do it. I'm assuming you don't have a router, right? Thus, the easiest way, IMO, would be to get a CAT-5 Crossover Cable and connect it from your home pc to your laptop...assuming you both have LAN jacks. Then you just go to network settings and setup a home network.
Neural Interface Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 Yeah, its easy enough just setup a network then enable file sharing in the connections properties and then enable sharing on the folders. You would be best to just transfer any fikes mp3 etc to your desktop comp and listen then if need be delete them, but as far as I know you cant play an mp3 over a network, google cuase im not exactly sure they might be other ways
Special_K Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 yea you could use just a regular ethernet cable for that tho, you can get those cheap too
Psywar Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 yea you could use just a regular ethernet cable for that tho, you can get those cheap too to use a reg. cable though he would need a hub/switch.. assuming he does not have his cheapest method would be the crossover cable.. laptop has to have a netcard built in to it.. so he would only have to buy 1 netcard and the cable.. and not 1 net card.. a hub/switch and 2 cables.. Eva_Unit_0 Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 Yeah, I think it's unanimous. Just network the two directly together. It's easy to set up the file sharing properties under windows. By the way, kup22r, I love your avatar. I so wish I had a car like Tak's.

H2O Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 No need to use the wireless part of the router. All you have to do is get yourself two CAT5 ethernet cable. Use one cable to connect one computer to the router and the second cable connects the second to the router. Once it's setup, power up everything and you got yourself a small 2 computer network. But since it's only a temporary connection that u want, I would suggest to just buy a crossover CAT5 cable. Connect the computers thru the NICs directly [no need for router.] It's easier, faster and it's more or less the same as using the router. Assuming you're running WinXP on both computers, Windows will detect the network and help you setup a home network.
Eva_Unit_0 Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 btw eva_unit_0, you should check out Initial D- Arcade stage. really cool arcade game. I love that game!! We have one at a local mall. I drive a red FC3S, and I'm about a third of the way through the main game. My only complaint with the game is that the shifter is on the left side. <_< Regarding your initial question, everyone else pretty much hit it all. Up at college I shared my MP3s (pworded of course), and my friend who lived on West Campus, while I lived on North, she played them directly from my comp all the time, and that was back on win98. So yeah, you can basically run anything over a network. My friends even used to watch movies directly off my computer.
