Katmandu Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 Hi, I'm new here but have found that building my own computer was pretty cool. Now that I'm hooked, and building my son's, I've got a unique question; Will 'piggy-backing' two case fans (due to lack of fan openings) offer substantial air flow vise one faster/louder fan? I figured that if both push 45 CFM's each that two going the same direction will push maybe 70? I'd just like to keep the sound down. Thanks for any input. Agallion Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 i dont think it works like that..but ya never know..get 2 fans and put ur hand in front see if its stronger i guess
bishop245 Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 you could just drill a hole in the case with a holesaw and mount the extra fan  but to answer your question no it will not add up to 70cfm it will however increase airflow somewhat and noise also
General Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 hmm. thats a good idea. i dont think they would. air vented by the first fan would only be revented by the second. so it would vent 45 by the first then the second would just send that air out. thats my "hypothesis" you could try it and see. personally i think that would look really cool
Agallion Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 i think that air would make the 2nd fan spin slighty faster maybe   hehe if your original theory worked i could see some one:  piggy back 3 tornados OMG MY COMPUTER IS FLYING!!  OMG I JUST LOST MY COMPUTER  OMG A F18 JUST SHOT DOWN MY COMPUTER CAUSE THEY THOUGHT IT WAS A PRESENT FROM OSAMA

Agallion Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 lol look a mine 3-9 is -6 then hte rest is 66 so im -
InvaderTrax Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 No, it wouldn't do any good. It'd just be a waste of power. Now, you could drill another fan whole below the first one and put on there. In fact, make one in intake and one an exhaust
asus Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 (edited) riight... Â Â anyways, it wouldnt increase the airflow very much, though the velocity of the air might be faster, you would also get more noise from the increased vibration. Â NO.. if 2 fans are diffrent in speed... it will not help at all.. it well lessen the life of one of the fans due to strain on the moter! It will make a racket too. You dont want do do this do what bishop245 said! Make a blow hole or something! BLOW HOLE try this, you dont kneed a dremel or a 120 mm blowhole, you can use a diffrent size, but whatever flots your boat! bishop245 Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 d3 did it on his heat sink with 2 80 or 92 mm tornadoes and it did increase the airflow abit and cooled a lil better but the noise was more also

So that's what that noise was...
ClayMeow Posted December 24, 2003 Posted December 24, 2003 yeah, basically what others have said. You'd experience a SLIGHT increase in airflow, mainly from the second fan making the first one spin a little faster due to pull. Yeah, this puts more strain on the fan, but who really cares...so in a year or two when it breaks you spend another $10 for one, right? But the main thing is noise. You'll basically double your noise while only increasing airflow MAYBE 10% if you're lucky (10% over 40 i mean....so like 44, not 70...the second fan can't pull in any more air then the first one pulls in...think about it).
