Muskie Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 (edited) I have an ultra 650watt psu with i believe 28amp on the two 12v rails. I was thinking of basing a new build on a slit setup and I wasn't sure if people think this will cut it. I've seen suggestions that for a stable sli setup most suggest 750+ on the psu. I've never run in sli so any advice on power consumption would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise I would suggest Corsairs' 750w PSU.
BKen Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 It should be enough....forget the link, but it should that an SLi 8800GTX(or was it GTS?), quadcore system with tons of HDs ran fine on around 500 watts of power. Not sure of how good Ultra PSUs are, but once again should be fine. If you are going to replace it though, I'd recommend Corsair. In all seriousness either one would work fine but I'd feel better with the PC Power and Cooling model (hence why I have it lol). kingdingeling Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 What system is this going to run? Nobody can really give ANY useful information without your system specs. Â On the other hand, people tend to overkill on power supplies. I ran the rig in my sig (minus one 8800GT) on an Antec Earthwatts 380W without any problems! Muskie Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Well my current system specs are: amd x2 4400+ (939) asus a8n32-sli 4 gb (4x1gb ddr 400 (gskill)) evga 8800 GTS 320 2x 320gb internal sata HD creative audigy sound card 2x optical drives(dvd & dvd burner) 4 case fans  my planned system setup: i7 920 x58 mobo(probally gigabyte ud5) 6gb 1600 ram(3x2gb) evga gtx 260 216 (1 to start but question revolved around adding a second) rest is the same as above   As for the psu i believe it has the 2x6pin. I'm not sure if each is on a differnt rail or not.
devit Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 i guess Corsair`s 750w it more than enough.but if u plan to add a second videocard...i would try 1000w
Muskie Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 well the original question was if my 650 would cut it as I'd prefer to avoid buying a new psu. If i had to buy a new one I'd probably get an efficient 850 or 1000. Most likely a corsair, seasonic, or pc power and cooling. So I'd probably end up dropping an extra 200-250 above and beyond the current upgrades. Â As it is right now would the current psu(650 ultra) cut it for the single card setup? I could always look to upgrade the psu when i decide to go sli and get the second card.
Krieg1337 Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I would suggest the PC Power and Cooling 750, I heard it runs two GTX 260's(correct me if I am wrong). It would probably be one of the best price/performance PSU's.
Muskie Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 ya i was actually looking at that one. saw it on sale for just above $100 not long ago. Is it possible that we may see power requirements to continue to climb like they have over teh last few years. I really am going to try to make my next build as future proof as possible. Krieg1337 Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 If you want a power supply that will probably last you for the rest of your life you might want to get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817703012 If you want a power supply that will last you pretty long I would maybe get this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...amp;Tpk=Corsair
Muskie Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 wow, not cheap! I'll see what my final budget is when i start to scrape the parts together. Then I'll be able to see if i can afford to pick up a quality psu as well. I cant complain about teh one i got now, especially considering after rebates it ended up being free =)
