Memory, Help Me Decide!

Recommended Posts

I've been scoping out memory for a while now, I asked my folks for vista 64 bit and 4 gigs of memory for x-mas. So I'm trying to figure out what I want for ram. The crucial ballistix stuff is super cheap right now but are they cheap because there using different chips now? Thats what I had heard.

Anyway I dont want to make the folks spend a ton on the OS and the RAM I emailed them a link to an OEM Vista 64 bit off newegg for like 79 bucks. Hoping to find some good ram for around that same price.

Oh and DDR2 no DDR3. 4 gigs, prefer stock speeds of 800mhz for the OCing potential but if you guys know of some 1066 or what ever that OC's well let me know.

Edit: Found this OCZ ReaperX for a decent price, anyone have experiance with this stuff. Good / bad?

Nowadays, pretty much every brand name 800-1066MHz RAM will clock and perform similarly. That Mushkin kit I have clocks up to about 1160MHz which is pretty good for 4GB. I've heard the newer Ballistix don't clock as good as they used to as well.

Those Reaper's look great for 50$ !

Yea that was what I was thinking generally, sounds good then I'll just look around see if I can find any at a decent price with the specs I want. I found a few OCZ 4gig (2gx2) that had timings of 4-4-3-15 and ran at 800mhz which sounded pretty good. I would think if I brought up to 5-5-5-15 I could Oc it pretty well.

I was looking at some Mushkin stuff, I have a mushkin PSU and its excellent. I've done a lot of testing on it (I'm an electrical engineer as well as computer engineer) I've hooked it up to my oscilloscope and checked out how noisy the lines were and it was incredibly clean. So I may try to find some Mushkin ram I'm impressed with there quality.

i got myself the 4-4-4-15 ones (3 pairs so far). amazing and they stay clocked at 1066 @ 5-5-5-18 and passed memtest without error also cold to the touch might i add. they seem to keep having rebates so im thinking OCZ is getting rid of there DDR2 stock.

That memory doesn't have free shipping, and just looks weird.

Those are some of my recommendations.

If you want a first-hand opinion, then these aren't too bad either, they perform as stated and the heat spreaders look more than adequate.

Yea I just emailed my pops with the link to the OCZ Reaper HPC 1066, I'm pretty excited for Christmas! I'm getting ram and my new vista OS from my dad and my mom is going to give me money for books for next semester, with books out of the way I'll be doing a new build here pretty soon! (Books cost me over $800 last semester <_<)
