  1. 1. How often do you do a complete system overhaul or build/buy a new system.

I look for a compelling tech upgrade before starting a new build which leads to a two year upgrade cycle for me.

My current C2D with 4GB RAM is more than enough for 80% of my computing needs but has started to show it's age when working with large graphics files and video encoding.

I was looking at one of the new Core i7 rigs but have decided to wait to see what the performance/price difference is with the 1166 pin version with dual-channel RAM next spring.

Honestly, I'd buy right now if there wasn't such a price premium on DDR3 RAM.

I go about every 1.5 - 2 years. Sometomes with upgrades inbetween.. This last one was supposed to be an upgrade... adding a mobo that could use PCI-E to a p4 478.... but since performance was so bottlenecked I decided to drop the entire P4 setup and keep just the card and completely overhaul it.... Hence the system I got now.

I won't be doing another full build for least 4 years.

Before that however I upgraded at least once a year.

1.5 - 2 years is usually how long until I build a new system.

It's not just time that makes me want to buy a new rig it also depends on how my rig is preforming with new software and games and what advantage the new hardware has over my current rig.

This made me curious, i had to research the crap. Consistently 3yrs - could have swore it was 5yrs.

PI 166MHz

PII 700MHz

3500+

Opty 165

No wonder I'm feeling the need to upgrade, almost at the 3yr point for the 165.
