  1. 1. How often do you do a complete system overhaul or build/buy a new system.

Basically I'm just curious how often you get a completely new system. I'm not talking a RAM upgrade, I'm talking new motherboard, cpu, gpu, as a minimum.

It's about three to four years for me. I would love to upgrade more than that, but the money situation is killing me overall.

My computer will be five years old this May, though I've added some parts here and there. Either way, I'm about to have to upgrade at this rate. :blink:

For me it depends. I got a P4 3.6 GHZ back in 2003. I just replaced it with the new 45nm quad. I mean honestly as long as I shut most things down before I game it was awesome as far as CPU. The ONLY reason I did a complete overhaul was because of the date AGP and memory speeds. So for me its a question of over all technical growth on the MOBO and components. More than one part has to be lacking for me to do a complete overhaul. That P4 is going to go work on my network doing some other chore now, just haven't decided what yet. That being said I also just got the wife a I7 system as well and her old system was a core duo that just never ran very solidly and its being given to grandma to become a email machine.

About 2-3+ years. I do small upgrades. I don't do a compete overhaul, unless I got money.

1GB RAM -> 2GB RAM

7800GT -> 8800GTS

15" CRT -> 2x 15" CRT -> 19" LCD -> 24" LCD

Then I just recently purchased a new Quad upgrade (mobo, cpu, ram, and reusing the rest of the PC below).

I upgrade just about every year. I don't really have a huge reason to do so...I just find some way to justify it. I nearly bought a 128 GB SSD last night even though my drives aren't anything close to slow. :lol:

there are several factors involved here.....technology improvements over time....price reductions/financial security and cost effectivness....quantifiable gains in performance, and the all important "wife/happiness quotient"..........
