LordFess Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 I am considering getting myself a Christmas present and the present will either be the Logitech Z5500 Digital Speakers or the Creative 550w Megaworks surround sound speakers ...LoL.... I will use them primarily for PC Gaming....I currently have a Harmon Kardon 2.1 setup that I bought with my old Dell Dimension 8500 PC.They sound really nice but I want the surround sound effect for gaming. ATM I rarely listen to the my current speakers as I use my Sennhieser headphones instead.... Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated !! Thanks for your quick response!! .... I can tell you I am leaning heavily in the Z5500 direction and your comments have even pushed me further toward getting them. Don't worry as you can see in my sig I have a Razer Baracuda Audio card which should handle them quite well I think. BTW what kind of Audio card are you using?.....I also have a Creative Labs XFI Extreme Gamer card as well and am wondering which would be better to use with the Logitech Z5500? robAP Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 (edited) i have a previous generation of what your looking at. if the same design exists, then the sub-woofer is really overpowered for the typical small office computer room. but the good thing is you can freakin' rock out to it or to any thundering games. enough to make anyone else in your house or apartment complex yell at you to turn it down. The best results for sound quality will come only if your using some sort of bass crossover in your software. At first i was thinking "boy this is great but its a little muddy in the middle ranges" and then i found the crossover part of the software and started playing with that and it lowered the bass a bit and got rid of the bass signal being sent to the satellites. since they didn't have to produce that sound too, they cleared up like crystal and the sub-woofer bass got really nice and tight. after that I became very impressed with the system instead of just okay with it. oh, i have em hooked up to a SB x-fi platinum card and using the related software. I really like the card, but the real audiophiles here will mostly steer you toward the M-Audio or Azuntech cards. HardNRG has modded his x-fi card for better sound, but thats really just tailoring to suit individual tastes. I've only used the x-fi card and therefore cannot comment on the quality of the other cards. perhaps i need to go look at audiophile sites and see what they like. LordFess Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Z5500 sounds like garbage =( Thanks for your response silkster! Have you purchased the Z550's before? Queenz Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 Z5500's do sound like garbage. I had them hooked up in my living room before and they suck, plus they are not shielded properly. Too much interference!! A good set of speakers would be non computer speakers. Like a home theater set.
LordFess Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 (edited) Hmmm this seems strange you two would have the same negative opinion about the Z5500's since every where I have checked the reviews are 95%+ positive and you say they are garbage. ....Does not make alot of sence to me. They are PC SPEAKERS!! NOT Home Theatre. Home Theatre stuff runs into THOUSANDS, so OF COURSE it is going to sound better. These speakers are for your PC, and for the money they sound AWESOME! Infact, FIND me speakers that sound BETTER for Less? And have the same features, AKA, 5.1 minimum, and Optical, Coax etc in. I own the Z-5500 paired with a Barracuda AC-1 sound card, and I love it. To me, they sound incredible. Had them for a few years, and never any trouble. Gaming with these is insane! Films & Music is good too. One last thing, these speakers are THX certified. Not that that means much, but it means a hell of a lot MORE than nothing. It shows that they confirm to a certain sound standard. psycho_terror Posted December 7, 2008 Posted December 7, 2008 what software are you using for crossover have the same problem creative soundcards have the option in "speaker settings". i don't use it myself, as i feel as if i'm actually cutting off some frequencies by using the software crossover, so i just leave it to the speakers to decide. it's a matter of taste i guess. I believe that I have made up my mind and am going to purchase the Z5500s...Soooo I am wondering which audio card would be better to use with the new speakers the Razer Barracuda AC-1 that I had bought to upgrade my old system or the Creative XFI Exterme Gamer card that I purchased with my new Dell. Remember PC Gaming is my bag....I don't listen to music much any more..... Plus any tips or recommendations concerning how I might get the most out of the Z5500 set up for gaming would be appreciated very much!!
