robAP Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 (edited) Can't find a case that really fits your needs? Did you decide to build your own case because "they" couldn't build the one you really want? Something that fits the room and your needs perfectly? Well if you broke down and spent the time to build your own from scratch...instead of modding an already existing case...then please post a picture of it here. Please describe the approach and the reason to build it. I'm seriously thinking about it myself. I've gotten into building my own speaker cabinets (it's cheap to do!!) and I think with a little creativity in materials, a VERY nice case can be made to fit the office, if not the living room and not be an eyesore. It would have the perfect cooling for the build, and be probably silent at the same time. I found this one....mod of the year 2006....but that is entirely too extreme of an effort if you don't just happen to have liquid cooled milling machines hanging about in your house or basement or professional workshop just like everyone else has in their barn out back. So, If you did it or know of one, please post pictures or links. Thank you. Edited December 4, 2008 by robAP
HarryTaco Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 (edited) Well that case you posted certainly is a beautiful masterpiece and rightfully deserves the credit given. Ive never, nor will I ever, have those kind of asperations. My goals are more in line with the case just being a part of the whole that will give me what I want, a great "bang-for-the-buck" system. The case below, I did back in late 2004 early 2005. I still use it today and it serves me well. I have purchased more Acrylic and will build a slightly different and smaller case, for a more unconventional kind of Water Cooling Idea Ive been thinking on. Anyway, Pics below show my build up and finished case. Hope this helps out a bit. Origioinally I had intended to make this case as part of a Water Cooled system, hence the large dimensions. But, I ended up just going with Air Cooling because I ran out of $$ for the extra cost of Water Cooling Hardware. HarryTaco Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 (edited) Hey, Kwok, Were you on DFI-street under a different name? I coulda sworn I've seen those pictures before. Hi Nate, Yeah, these are them. I couldnt have the name "Drago" at OC here, so I changed it to Kwok, which is a name i use often for Online Gaming. Glad you remembered Hah! Up and Running. robAP Posted December 4, 2008 Posted December 4, 2008 very nice Kwok, thats exactly what I'm talking about. What did you use to fasten the panels together? glue? tape? what kind? and where di dyou get the metal pieces for the back to fit the slots? grabbed from another extra case or is there a parts supply house somewhere for those parts? thanks for sharing. kingdingeling Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 robAP, be sure to check out Fuelers worklogs! One of his rigs was on the front of CPU Magazine I think, the worklogs should be easily found through his profile.

When building with Acrylic, the bonding agent used is acetone based. The pieces are actually melted together to form one piece. The strength is, of course, outstanding. By searching some of the online Retail Hardware sites you can eventually find all the parts needed to build a case. Switches, Mobo backing plates, and the Metal Housing in the back, you can get them in Acrylic too but I like the Metal simply because it seems to be a more accurate fit. I got my Metal Housing by removing it from an old case I had sitting around. Some of the best sites to get stuff for your own build are Acrylic Case Manufacturer sites. They usually sell almost all the additional hardware one would need. Buying Acrylic is another area. Since it isnt sold on every street corner in every city, you would have to hunt for the closest places in your part of the world. There are two kinds of Acrylic, "Cast Acrylic" and "Extruded Acrylic". Cast Acrylic is a little easier to work with, it will chip less when drilling on it. Its also the more expensive of the two. Extruded Acrylic takes a little more care when building but also Bonds a little cleaner than Cast. Its also cheaper. The material for my first case was Cast, but Ive already purchased Extruded for my second case due to its cleaner bonding characteristics, not to mention less $$. Hope this helps. If you have any questions at all just ask away. I stop by OCC usually once a day.
robAP Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 (edited) nice. yeah i saw something a while back about making their own bonding agents melting chips of acrylic or something in the acetone, making a goopy mix that dried perfectly clear. I wasn't sure if they made a glue or adhesive that did the same job without needing an open window, fan, and resistance to fumes. I'm sketching lately planforms for what i need and I'm considering at some time of working with an Acrylic and wood combination. Although I think i'm going to go with an all wood HTPC, veneer stained in either black or a furniture matching color....and the wood will be curving. If and when I start this i'll work up a log. and kingding, yeah i remember that case on CPU's cover. He did great work on that one. Did you see the pictures and the milling machines in his shop? man....I feel like I should go to Harbor Freight. My Antec 900 is so plain by comparison. By the way, do you have any pics of some speaker cabinets you've built? That's something that I'm kind of interested in.
