joshuam511 Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 hi got my new shiney computer a wile ago and gess what - the dvd drive broke. so i then had to get a new one, that then worked fine untill now and now it has broken. do dvd drives often brake, it is ide and when i unplug it and clean it sometimes it works again for a wile, are the particulaly reliable cd drives and would a sata cd drive stop this form happening ? thanks ps i had millions of sata ports so that isn't a problem and they look nicer lol
scr4wl Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Yes they can die but it's not the most common thing, if you've been using it nonstop 24/7 then yeah sure but it sounds like this is not the case. IDE is not a problem my living room computer still uses a 4 year old IDE combo drive. DvD drives are cheap so buy like three.(and SATA will be fine plus it's newer) Also whatever how long before they broke? If it was a couple of months you need to stop doing whatever your doing. g0tanks Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Maybe there's something wrong with the IDE port on your motherboard?
maj0rgamer Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 (edited) i'm also thinking that perhaps there is something wrong with the ide port you're using. Is there an alternate port that maybe you haven't tried? what exactly is it that happened to each drive? Same problem or different? Please explain. dvd drives really shouldn't be breaking all the time. i think you should go with a sata drive if you have to get another anyway...they're nice Edited November 30, 2008 by Maj0r Gamer
WhenKittensATK Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Have you tried it with a different cable. All my round IDE cables I got with my DFI board all died on me. Using regular flat ribbon cables now that work just fine.
Krieg1337 Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 If you want a good DVD Drive, get a SATA Lite On or Asus Lite On http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827106276 Asus http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16827135181 My friend has the Lite On, the 16x version, has had it for over a year and still works perfectly. I've heard SecureRom can break DVD Drives.
joshuam511 Posted December 3, 2008 Posted December 3, 2008 well i only vary rarely attualy use my dvd drive, maybe twice a week, and they have broken after about 3 months each. i have tryed two ide port [all two]. and i will soon try with a different cable and see if that works. the strange thing is they both didn't just stop working but kinda died intermitantly for a will. thanks
SuppA-SnipA Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 all the lite-on drives i've had, around 2004 to 2005, they were all loud as hell, and had flimsy trays, not sure if they're still like that, can someone tell me? but i highly recommend pioneer and samsung drives
slick2500 Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Have you tried plugging in a different molex? @ SuppA-SnipA I have a Lite-On dvd burner and with certain types of games depending on the copy protection it can get very loud. If I play Battlefield 2, Halo 2, Guitar Hero 3, Need for Speed Carbon it loads the DVD right up doesn't make any noise what so ever, if I pop in Crysis it takes about a 1 minuet to load and you can hear the drive spinning up and down in speed. Kingfisher Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I have both a Lite-on and an Asus DVD burner, both are sata and I havr to say the Asus is not as loud as the lite-on. Both work great and both are over a year old.

stewy_fallingup Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 (edited) You can try an IDE to SATA Mini Vertical Bridge Just to see if it is your IDE port on the mobo. Edited December 10, 2008 by stewy_fallingup
