TheGanjaKing Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Pretty sure I am going to have a 300gb raptor for my OS drive (unless you can convince me that's not a good choice) and a 1 or 1.5 tb for storage. Looking at the 300gb raptor and trying to decide if I should go with a $250 glfs oem drive or if I should pony up the extra 30-50$ to get a retail box version. Will it help me at all for warranty issues to have a retail box? So far every piece of my new system has been new/box and I have been saving all in case I have issues with the hardware down the road. ClayMeow Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Most of my hard drives, both for personal use and at work, have been OEM (often from newegg).
WhenKittensATK Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 OEM all the way if you got cables. If you don't have the cables buy them online.

Well my super dope mother board happened to come with a fistfull of every cable known to man, so I should be good there. So is there really any reason I shouldn't take advantage of this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...6-260-_-Product

If those are worth $50 to you, then sure, go ahead...and see a shrink while you're at it . Seriously though...god forbid you have a problem and need to send it back to WD, they won't care if you send it back in a regular brown box (assuming proper protection, of course). WhenKittensATK Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 (edited) If it was this vs the retail, I would just get the OEM. Not sure how these VelociRaptor compare to a raid 0. Indeed, I ordered two open boxed WD 320gb from newegg. Basically OEM, but opened lol. One had a ton of errors while running through WD Diag, the other was fine. Shipped it to WD with the stuff Newegg shipped to me in the exact same bubble wrap, anti static and box. Then WD sent me a new drive with same specs. $120 for Raid 0, woot. To answer your warrenty question, most manufactures treat OEM, Retail, and Open Box the same as long as you buy it from one of their licensed distrubutors. Second hand stuff like on eBay is up to the manufacture's disgression. I know DFI doesn't take second hand motherboards from eBay under their warrenty. Most online retailers have like a 15-day return refund for their open box items. OEM is treated as the same as retail items on Newegg, I believe. It's only open box items that get a shorter support from online retailers.
TheGanjaKing Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Good to see everyone has jokes these days. Granted it's been years since I've had to deal with shipping back PC parts, just seemed like everytime I wanted to, I needed either the box/upc or the paperwork that was inside. So I can assume this is no longer really an issue, just ship back and get your new item within a reasonable timeframe?
WhenKittensATK Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 (edited) Yea for my WD RMA, all I had to do was ship them my Newegg Invoice and that was it. If they ask for the box or UPC, just say it was OEM. Edited November 30, 2008 by Krazyxazn
TheGanjaKing Posted November 30, 2008 Posted November 30, 2008 Just so I can get it out of the way, but would the same be said for getting OEM Blu-ray/DVD RW drives? Maybe I just always had a stigma about unpackaged non shrink wrap items not working as well or lasting as long as a retail boxed item. Honestly i'm getting to the point where I'm willing to sacrifice on the rest of the pieces I wanted to just get it going. But if I'm going to have a decent system, I want to eliminate as many bottle-necks as possible.
