rich Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 alright, i need a little help here. i bought my dad a new cd-rom(a sony dvd/cd combo) for christmas because his cd drive is pretty much crapping out on him. well this morning while i was asleep i guess it went, so my mother gave him the drive. my mom wakes me up and says that he needs my help. so i walk over and ask what's going on. "insert boot disk" error. yeah, no problem, i plug the hd ide cable back in, not sure how it got unplugged, and i boot the machine. nothing, no response, no beeping, nothing. anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be? my father said he didn't touch anything, and nothing changed from the boot disk error to plugging that cable back in. i've heard of pulling the bios chip and putting it back in, but i've never done it. any other suggestions? i could really use some help here
Eva_Unit_0 Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 Did the problem start when you put the new drive in? If it did, maybe the new drive is shorting out and causing the problem. I had that exact issue occur because of a floppy drive that was shorting against the case once. Take the new drive out and try it. rich Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 how do you clear cmos? the ide cables aren't mixed up. i checked that. i checked most common problems. jumpers, cables, etc...but this cmos thing sounds good, how do i do it? Special_K Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 if you have your mobo manual its pretty easy. all you have to do is look and find where the cemos jumper is. switch it over and back and you just reset your bios. another trick you can do is take out the battery ont eh mobo, you choice, either work. rich Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 alright, i tried resetting that, and nothing. however, i did come up with a beep pattern. although i've never heard it before. 2 short and then 8 long. then it beeps 2 more short and one more long after a short delay. if anyone knows what that means that'd be greatly appreciated... Eva_Unit_0 Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 wow, that's a lot of beeps. Sounds like it's telling multiple things at once. Do you know what kind of bios the mobo has? (ami, award, or phoenix) I think the 8 beeps means a video error, such as it can't find the video card. rich Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 it's ami bios, i just checked the chip. so that probably means it is a vid card error. i'm going to see if i have another agp card to slap in there. we'll see what happens. i'm sure i'll be back with questions shortly. but thanks for the help so far
General912 Posted December 22, 2003 Posted December 22, 2003 try reseating the video card first. More then likley the video card got bumped when installing other stuff. Try that if that dosent work then replace the card.
