CheeseMan42 Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 So I have an extra computer sitting around that I'd like to turn into an NAS, but I know how to take care of that. The setup I have is a switch with a computer and an Xbox 360 connected to them. If I plug the NAS into the switch, will it need to have an IP address for me to access it from the computer, or would I be able to access it because it is connected locally? I've done this type of thing with a router before, and just wasn't sure if I could do it with a switch. Thanks.
flareback Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 It will need an ip address. Any device (computer or xbox) connected to a network needs an ip for communication to take place. If you use dhcp then it will be given an ip automagically. curiously, what OS are you using for the NAS box?
CheeseMan42 Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 I was planning to go with Ubuntu server and set up Samba, SSH, and FTP. I've read that this is a pretty good combination.
flareback Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Ok, sounds good. I've never done it personally so I was just curious what you're setup would be.
Waco Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Just put everything on there you want to share and use your service of choice to make it available. I use Vista Business on my HTPC and it effectively acts as NAS for my desktop. You can do the same with XP or any flavor of Linux. CheeseMan42 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 I think I'm just going to go with switching out the switch for a router which will make this easier for me. I'm already at the limit of IP's that we are allowed from my university anyway.

CheeseMan42 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Yes, that would make the network setup part of it much simpler and even more secure. That's what I figured, and I don't really need the router where it currently is anyway.
CheeseMan42 Posted December 5, 2008 Posted December 5, 2008 Would it be possible to do something like what I have here? I know you can do this with Linux by setting it up as a DHCP/Router. Can something like this be done in Vista?
