Question About Nas

So I have an extra computer sitting around that I'd like to turn into an NAS, but I know how to take care of that. The setup I have is a switch with a computer and an Xbox 360 connected to them. If I plug the NAS into the switch, will it need to have an IP address for me to access it from the computer, or would I be able to access it because it is connected locally? I've done this type of thing with a router before, and just wasn't sure if I could do it with a switch. Thanks.

It will need an ip address. Any device (computer or xbox) connected to a network needs an ip for communication to take place. If you use dhcp then it will be given an ip automagically.

curiously, what OS are you using for the NAS box?

Just put everything on there you want to share and use your service of choice to make it available. I use Vista Business on my HTPC and it effectively acts as NAS for my desktop. You can do the same with XP or any flavor of Linux.

I think I'm just going to go with switching out the switch for a router which will make this easier for me. I'm already at the limit of IP's that we are allowed from my university anyway.

Yes, that would make the network setup part of it much simpler and even more secure.
