Xfx 9800gt Power Supply Question

I bought this video card online a few days ago, and i read that it needs atleast a 400-450w Psu... I checked my PSU and it said its 480w (Max output 500w), having 2 12v rails, first one being 16a, second one being 15a... My PSU doesnt have the 6pin pci-e power connector, and i read that they don't recommend using the connector adapter that comes with it (The 4pin molex to 6pin power thingy)...

So my question(s) are:

Is my current PSU going to be able to handle this vid card?

Is it going to work properly with me using the connector adapter instead of having it already as part of my psu?

Thanks.

We will need to know the specs of the entire rig (cpu, HD's, overclocked or not etc.) to make a decision on this.

The connector adapter should be fine. Who recommends not to use it...the power supply manufacturer or the card maker? It shouldn't be a problem, most likely more of a ploy to try to get you to buy another power supply or something just to cover any loses for the company.

How many amps does that video card use?

Your power supply should be fine, but i would check out total usage once you get the card installed. You can google around for a free online tester to check how much juice your system is using.

Welcome to the forum by the way B:)

I dont know the model, it was a prebuilt pc that i upgraded that i bought from a local pc store... I read the review for this card from this website and they reviewer said xfx doesnt recommend using the adaptor provided... just wondering why?

edit: Checked the requirements for the card...

Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.

(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 26 Amp Amps.)

Minimum 450 Watt for SLI mode system.

An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector

So does that mean that the 12V1 and 12V2 combine to 31amps, so i should be ok?

Still kinda worried y they are not recommending using the 6 to 4 pin adapter...

The adapter will do just fine but I'm not too happy with the no name 480W PSU. I like to power up my rigs with quality PSU's and have no worries later.

If a card maker doesn't recommend an adapter included in their own product i would say that's cause for alarm. XFX is a major player in the video card market, i would wonder why as well. But it should still work just fine.

It is concerning that your supply may be an off brand, which may make it poor quality...it should still work though. It's never a bad idea to upgrade it if you have the money however. Can you open up the case and check on the brand?

The 12v rails do combine and in theory you should be okay.

You might wanna check this out, i didn't know about this...

http://nvidia.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/nvidia....hp?p_faqid=2198

the link also has a link that leads to a link for a recommended wattage calculator.

What does that mean?? So if i connect that adapter to convert the 4 pin molex connection to the 6 pin pci-e power controller it might f-up?
