Have A Few Questions Before I Go Break Something.

Recommended Posts

Hey people hope some one can answer my questions.

Firstly i just purchased a new system which my friend has been building for me.

We are just waiting for the processor which should be at his work by tomorrow

hopefully. He took the system round today and finnished the build so that he can

fit the processor and see if the beast will run. He advised me to not overclock it

for a while. is this the best thing if so how long should i wait?

My system consitsof an intel q9650, asus maximus exreame, hd 4870x2, 4 gig

ballitix ddr3 1333mhz,2 x 300gig 10,000rpm hdd raid 0, 750gig hdd for storage,

antec p182 case, asus silent square processor heat sink, and a 700w psu from

tagan.

To start with im going to use the psu level up function. is this a good idea?

any advice on how far i should and could go?

He advised me to not overclock it

for a while.

Did he say why?

There is no break in period for computer hardware, so essentially (as long as it runs stable at stock settings to begin with) you can go ahead and start overclocking...

There's no reason you'd have to wait, unless he meant not until the thermal paste sets in and even that is negligible, once the paste sets in the temps will go down either way.

Furthermore, I'm not familiar with this PSU Level up function you speak of...

Im not to sure maby jsut to see if it was running stable i didnt really ask him how long. Have you had any experiances with my mother board? any tip?

If you really want to get the most out of your processor but dont know where to start then yes the level up function is good with but in the mean time look at the overclocking forums because there are step by step guides on how to go about it. Once you learn what the labels of all the functions mean and do on your motherboard then it is no problem, just use some common sense and talk to people that have the same proc as you to see what settings they are good at.

I've never used the Extreme, but I used to have the Maximus Formula SE and it was a pretty good board, while it lasted. In any case, if you've never overclocked before and you want, I'd suggest reading up on it Overclocking Core 2 Duos/Quads; while the Level-Up feature is quick and easy, it isn't exactly pin-point accurate. My experience with the SE taught me that using Level-up will either use too little or too much voltage and you'll either have instability, resulting in you either having to set a lower FSB or overvolt some more. Or, in the case of too much voltage, you'll have higher temperatures for absolutely no reason.

It has profiles as well according to whatever CPU you're using, and it'll adjust the clock speed and FSB to match a higher (and more expensive) model. Aside from that, I'd say DIY - Do It Yourself. :thumbs-up:

nice setup you got there! I had the extreme for quite some time, it's actually quite overclocking friendly. I'd say read some guides then try to overclock a tad, that cpu is good for 4GHZ plus! If you have probs after reading some guides then ask again, but most of the guides really teach you alot.
