speedhungryj Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 greetings everyone!! ok so putting it in a nutshell, building new system strictly for producing music (to run programs like cubase SX 3/pro-tools/reason) so i figured tons of memory, not so much with the gaming aspect but still enough to run a few games here and there. i just ordered my E8400 wolfdale from newegg but still dumbfound to what mobo and quality of ram to get. im set for 8 gigs of ram but what mobo? my main goal is a stable non latency multi recording system so mobo options not that picky but at least 4+ usb 2.0 and firewire. someone plz help!!! i basicallly just need someone to make me a list!!! i got the e8400 coming! i know there are jedi OC'ers out there, im just anakin at this stuff!! lol plz help
JackA Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Hello! If you're running a 32-bit operating system, then it can only make use of 2gb of RAM - unfortunately you'll be restricted to that! As for the motherboard, it depends what sort of things you're looking to do with it. There is a fantastic motherboard by MSI which I have got - the P35 Neo. Can be bought from Aria.co.uk for around
speedhungryj Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 Hey thanks jack for the reply, to be specific ive actually chosen windows xp 64bit sp2c as my ideal OS because of the majority of my VST plugins working accordingly and stable with it. I have tested my exact multi-recording setup on my dads pc running premium 64bit with 4gigs ram.. most plugins didnt work, hopefully with this xp pro 64bit old fashion will solve the problem(s) but as far as stability, i need to know what MOBO/RAM combo best suits my applications/functions as multi-recording, memory handling programs. Ive been researching alot and concluded GSkill ram is in my budget: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820231151 just a good MOBO + RAM with 8GIG combo using xp pro 64bit, anyone have any problems with that OS? capthowdy575 Posted November 17, 2008 Posted November 17, 2008 grab a gigabyte p35 chipset and use the gskill ram that you have linked. will work with no problems. just wondering why you didn't pick up a quad core instead of a dual. Turophiliac Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 (edited) No offense but this is not correct, a 32 bit operating system will make use of 3.2GB to 3.5GB of memory you only loss from .5GB to .8GB of 4Gb of memory. In theory. but in practice i've seen values ranging from 3.5GB down to 2.5/2.4 so, depending on many things, it can be much worse. EDIT: Oops almost forgot to write about the OP's topic. that G Skill RAM is okay, but it's only 800MHz and 5-5-5-15 timings. If I were you, i would make sure to get a nice stable OC on that processor, because by going with a dual core vs a quad, you're limiting yourself on how much work you can get done, but anyway with an OC on that processor, it would probably benefit you to get some higher clocked RAM. I'm not saying it's necessary, but it'd definitely improve performance. I know that you said that RAM is in your price range, but i would suggest widening it if you are going to get 8GB of RAM... G Skill is definitely a brand i'd recommend, and if you like them, THIS would be your best bet on a quality 8GB set. I know it's about $100 more, but it will be worth it, trust me. If you do it right you actually can get 4GB(thats what alienware claims at least)
Cyrosis Posted November 18, 2008 Posted November 18, 2008 (edited) I have 3.25gb's recognized in Xp32bit, and don't run into any problems maxing out the 3gb's of addressable space using the 3gb switch. Anything over 3gb's wont be used in most cases anyway, since the switch only allows 3gb's of space for applications, so I don't see why anyone would be concerned unless they run into BSOD's from the kernel getting chocked. Anyway, since he's going with a 64bit OS, it's rather irrelevant. Onto the topic, 8gb's of memory for a DAW build is rather overkill from a performance standpoint. If you plan to fill up Kontakt with 60gb's worth of samples at once, load the entire S2.0 kit with full bleeds, or try out the entire VSL line in one project, than I could see it coming in handy, I suppose with memory being so cheap, it doesn't really matter though. Lastly, have you looked into the DAW's you are using, to make sure they have native 64bit versions? I believe Cubase is the only one on that list that has a native 64bit version, so that 8gb's of memory wouldn't be doing anything in the other two, though I could be wrong about Cubase being the only in that list to have it, so something to look into. (If you're interested in buying a few VST's, I have some I'm getting rid of. /end [shameless plug.] Edited November 18, 2008 by Cyrosis
