TNT_4 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 I need some help choosing a processor for gaming i play first person shooters alot and will be doing a bit of video editing. MY processor choices are the E8400 and the Q6600. If i get the E8400 will it make full use of 1066mhz ram or is going with a 800mhz ram better, same goes for the Q6600 which ram will be better AS for my motherboard its between the ASU P5Q PRO and the gigabyte EP45DS3R Lastly need help choosing a PSU CORSAIR HX620 or CORSAIR TX750. Is a modular psu gonna make a big difference and whats the difference between modular and non modular. If u guys could reply it would really help as im goin 2 build my rig real soon maybe by the end of this week Please give me ur opinions and all comments will be much appreciated thanks
damian Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Seems like an E8400 would suite you best, although if you want some more headroom for multitasking the Q6600 is still a good choice. Both are you choose. As for the ram, it depends; do you intend to overclock? If so DDR2 1066MHz speeds would be a better choice that way when you keep bumping up the FSB it will put less of a strain on your ram. The motherboard: Both are good choices, people prefer gigabyte boards for there BIOS, its simple and intuitive, its great for beginning overclockers. The difference between modular and non modular is that with a modular power supply you have the option of only using the cables needed, and you wont have to have the hassle of having dangling unsued wires in your case (which also leads to better wire management and improved airflow). By the way what video card do you plan on buying and what resolution do you play games at?
Timmy94 Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 If you wont take the e8400 higher than say 3.6 to 3.8, you should be fine with 800 9x400=3.6, 1:1 on 800mhz 9x422=3.798 if you go 3.8 max, you will only be slightly ocing the ram

damian Posted November 16, 2008 Posted November 16, 2008 Take a look at this review done by ccokeman he compares the E8400 to a lot of other processors. They are pretty matched (when it comes to gaming), and others are far apart. But when overclocked its really good. http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/intel_e8400/8.htm
