dogpaddle Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 I am stuck So, at the moment, I'm tied between the e8400 and the q8200. My pc will primarily be for gaming, but also multitasking and some video editing/encoding. I've heard that, at the moment, the e8400 is outperforming the quads in gaming, but I want something that is future proof, and not going to take a huge chunk out of my wallet. That's why I'm almost set on the q8200. Also, I'm not looking at getting the q6600 because I've heard it runs hot. Can you help? Other specs: Case: Antec p182 Mobo: Asus P5Q Pro Mem: 4gb OCZ Reaper DDR2-800 (2x2gb) GFXCard: EVGA 7600 GT, XFX 9800 GT later PSU: Corsair CMPSU-550VX (550W) (almost forgot, if I do decide to go with quad, would I have to upgrade my PSU?) Thanks
AR-fatality Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 I'd say go with the dual E8400. Firstly it has a much higher clock speed and will overclock much better than the quad. And more importantly the Q8200 has only 2X2MB L2 Cache. Therfore the E8400 which has 6MB Cache will be way better when it comes to gaming and the Q8200 has a really low clock speed and multiplier. If u want a quad which wont cost u that much go with the Q6600....its cheaper, has more L2 Cache (8MB) and has a slightly higher clock speed. And u should also buy a CPU cooler if u plan on ocing especially.
The Smith Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 No you won't need to change your PSU. A 9800GT and a C2Q is not that demanding...
TheScavenger Posted November 11, 2008 Posted November 11, 2008 I second Fatality's idea. If you want to go cheap on a quad then buy a Q6600. Its a guaranteed +3.4GHz. Also, it will kick the E8400s but in encoding but not gaming.
