hardnrg Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 A recent breakthrough in making custom firmware for Canon Powershot cameras that use DryOS, means that they can now run CHDK, and some clever fellow figured it out for my A590IS, so now I have RAW and live histogram, and MANY MANY more controls, including scripting support for programmed continuous bursts using different settings (useful for DOF and HDR shots) I was a bit disappointed with the JPEG artifacting on this camera, but now with RAW support using CHDK "firmware", the picture quality is improved dramatically! CHDK is made for Powershot cameras that use the Digic III processor, a list of supported cameras is here: http://grandag.nm.ru/hdk/autobuild/download.htm Check out the difference in noise, banding, macroblocks, etc between the two images (RAW gets saved at the same time as the JPEG) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- JPEG, Superfine (highest quality setting) 100% crop Full size original JPEG: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/steve.goosse...517314475191842 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RAW, decoded with Lightbox using Auto Balance 100% crop Full size (saved as PNG): http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/steve.goosse...517276048862242 As of 24th Oct 2008, the latest build is 0.6.2, available for 1.00e and 1.01b versions of the A590IS: http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic...4.html#msg22934 How to find out the firmware version of the camera: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ#Q._How_can_...of_my_camera.3F AFAIK, there are only 1.00e and 1.01b firmware versions of the A590IS, so it's not like you need to try this in-store lol
Zertz Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 Nice!.. what ISO was that shot at? That Fuji I picked up (and returned) had insane noise at just 300 ISO, I might just pick up a 590IS...
hardnrg Posted October 24, 2008 Posted October 24, 2008 ISO 80 I'll have to try out higher ISO levels and see what happens... I'd expect the difference to widen as the JPEG artifacts get worse with the ISO noise, and RAW output retains a more natural film grain... hardnrg Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 Obviously, there is a lot of noise in this ISO 800 shot, and I had one dim light on in the room when I took the photo, no flash... but just look at the horrendous quality (at 100% zoom on the full resolution pics) between what is supposed to be the highest quality available, and what it is actually capable of... ISO 800 JPEG (Superfine) http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/steve.goosse...375909745857634 RAW saved as TIFF in Lightbox, then PNG in Photoshop http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/steve.goosse...375835273876802
suchuwato Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 That's rather impressive! I was looking to get a point and shoot, so maybe a Powershot is the way to go...
ARandomOWL Posted October 26, 2008 Posted October 26, 2008 U got some very interesting subjects there. Maybe something more natural would show up the detail better?
