IIxNullxII Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 (edited) Basically, my folks use the PC for work, and my dad for a few games like Oblivion. So, as tradition goes, I get a new PC, while my folks get my old PC. (the one in the sig, minus the Geforce 260, they get an 8800) All I need is Motherboard, CPU and RAM, so I was thinking of the following: For the CPU, an AMD Phenom 9950 Black Edition For the RAM , mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1066 I need an idea for the motherboard, I'm not up on the latest tech. I don't want to OC it, I just want it to be stable at stock speed. Price range $120-$200, maybe a little more if it's highly recommended. Thanks all, Null Edit: I need to make sure that most, if not all connectors take into account the massive GeForce 260GTX I'll be using; ports facing to the side, rather than straight up, or not in the vicinity of the GFX card at all. Queenz Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Why the lean towards AMD? Get yourself a nice P35 chipset board with a E8400, and throw in an HD4850.
damian Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 If you're set on AMD, I would look into the 790GX chipset. Here are some solids motherboards: DFI LanParty 790GX M2RS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813136058 ASUS M3A78-T - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131331 BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813138128
IIxNullxII Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 My last intel system was a 486DX-33mhz ;-)
kingdingeling Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 Yea, but current Intels rock AMDs socks! If you want quad core, grab yourself a Q9450 or similar, a DFI P45 board and drop in 4GB of DDR2 and you've got about double the performance of an AMD quad. GaiusMaxwell Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 (edited) and throw in an HD4850. Did you mean this for the parent's computer instead of the 8800gt or for nullx's computer? He has a gtx260 for his pc so it would make absolutely no sense to put a 4850 in it... EDIT: i would also go with intel, they are absolutely destroying AMD, grab up an E8400 and a p35/p45 chipset mobo Edited October 20, 2008 by Whatislove
IIxNullxII Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 I'm not opposed to Intel, it's just been so long since I've used them. What about that E8400 on newegg? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115037 which motherboard is good for minimal OC max reliability? Do they use DDR2 1066, or some kind of special crap like they did with RAMBUS?
ocmooz Posted October 20, 2008 Posted October 20, 2008 (edited) If you go with the E8400 the ASUS p5K SE/EPU is good for 3.6 without a vmod and I hear good things abou the P5Q's as well. Not to say that DFI and all the others mentioned so far don't make good mobos just a fan of ASUS. Good luck sounds like fun. With the $20 you save on the cpu, extend your budget $40 and get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131326, very nice board If you want to stay within your budget then there is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813128344 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...82E16813188026- maybe if you wanted to try SLI with your gtx260 at a later date, it is a worse chipset though Edited October 21, 2008 by Whatislove

Is it possible to use some DDR2 1066, such as this Mushkin? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820146785 ?
tkrow21 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Yeah, 1200 is just the max supported.
