ocmooz Posted October 11, 2008 Posted October 11, 2008 (edited) So I am starting to question whether it would be better to get a slower speed GPU with more memory rather than a faster one with half as much. I have been saving up for: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...82E16814130385. But lately I have been thinking that something with more memory might help things look prettier and allow me to run at a higher resolution(1680X1050) more smoothly. I also saw that the GTX+ isn't that much better than the GTX and GT models so I went looking for a 1GB card that fell into one of those types and this is what I found: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814130391. If anyone has an opinion on which would be better for a non-SLI setup or any insight on which would provide the best looking frames at a reasonable framerate I would appreciate the feedback. I am hoping for something that will run games with at least 8XAA, 8XAF at 40-60 FPS, but not crysis or anything massively ridiculous(or poorly coded ). So I await everyone's sage advise. Oh and I will not budge from nVidia so don't try and sway me. Thanks in advance... Edited October 11, 2008 by ocmooz

Well the 4850 is better and is the same price (or cheaper if you don't want a 1gb card which is still about the same price as the 9800gtx+)

I just want people's opinions on what would be better for me a faster GPU or one with more memory, not a referral for an unstable soon-to-be paper weight. But thanks for trying anyway. damian Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 (edited) an nvidia card is also a guaranteed "unstable soon to be paper weight" card as well, with in time of course.  is so fun to sway though http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/gi...te_9800gt/6.htm   EDIT: as for the OP the 9800gt is basically the same card as an 8800gt so performance is about the same. The 1Gb wont help much probably 4-5FPS increase at most, from what i have seen. Buy the 9800gtx instead, great card for the price tag. Ok, but if the 1GB card has to use its bandwidth less often, because of greater storage capacity, how would a faster card be better if its clock was only 30% or so faster? Am I thinking of this all wrong or is this an exception to what seems logical?
IVIYTH0S Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 the only paper concerned with ATI right now is the paper you'll be saving and the power you'll achieve for that price range. Other than the 9800GX2, the 9 series has is not worthwhile anymore (and if you plan on spending 200 dollars here is an offer that you can't refuse: ENJOY!) 9800gx2 for 229.99 I just got one, and yes the 4870 is awesome too

Am I thinking of this all wrong or is this an exception to what seems logical? no your not...not really. Like i said the 9800gt performs the same as an 8800gt which isnt to great now a days compared to other cards on the market, such as the 9800gtx/GTX 260/4870 Here is a review with a 1GB Palit 9800gt and as you can see the 9800GTX scores higher in just about every test http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/599/

The Smith Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 Don't go with a 1GB version. I currently have a 8800GT 1Gb and I don't like it!! The RAM is stable just fine. If I'm lucky I will be able to run benchmarks with a 20MHz OC. And in Call of Duty 4 I even get a few artifacts at stock!!! And no this isn't a RMA case. I already RMAed it, they sent me a new card, and it is the same. Ok it can depend on model and manufacturer, but that's what I retain from the last 1Gb version I had.
