Praz Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 Doesn't really matter if the smoke came from the inductors. If they smoked you can be sure some of the FETs are gone also. Although the smoke was most likely from one or more of the FETs. If the damage didn't get into the PCB it's repairable.
bg8780 Posted September 16, 2008 Posted September 16, 2008 yea im gonna go get a new mobo today. Do you guys think it is possible that the backplate from the TRUE 120 could have been too tight thus the metal part was touching something and shorted it out? Good point, but he needs to find out either way becuase that will be the difference of an easy 3 lead repair or multiple components needing to be tested and replaced as needed... yea im gonna go get a new mobo today. Do you guys think it is possible that the backplate from the TRUE 120 could have been too tight thus the metal part was touching something and shorted it out? I would say that would be unlikely, since I am pretty sure the backplate has a fairly thick plastic sheet stuck to it to prevent shorts. I have heard of more weird things happening though! bg8780 Posted September 17, 2008 Posted September 17, 2008 Yea i just dont want to wait for an RMA, but im pretty sure it was the TRUE's backplate that shorted out my mobo, right now im back to my thermaltake V1 and everything is fine. I googled it and found a lot of cases of the backplate shorting out mobo's. However this issue can be fixed with some electrical tape. What happened was my PSU was finding that there was a short therefore wouldnt boot but after me fideling with it and kinda forcing to boot anyway it finally just blew some smoke and me and shorted out.
