I'm stuck at what to do for my gaming rig. I'm running an E8400 with 4GB of DDR2 800 ram, vista 64, on a Gigabyte GA-EX38-DS4 board: all on a dell 3007WFP monitor that will do 2560x1600

Should I go with:

2x 4850's

2x 4870's

4870x2

a single 4870?

I normally play FPS games at 1680x1050, but sometime on RTS games, I love to max it out (2560x1600). I'm at a loss right now with the 4870x2's coming out here shortly.

Look at the latest review on the 4870x2. They have tests showing the 4870 in crossfire, and a 4870x2.

I say go with the 4870 crossfire but thats just me (might want to wait till they release a 1GB version)

The 4870X2 pulls far ahead at 2560x1600 in damn near all of the tests.

the shared RAM architecture of 4870X2 would be my choice for 2560x1600 without a doubt... if it was 1920x1200 I might see how 4850X2 does first...

Here's a couple things though that I've considered:

Some of the older games I have - C&C Generals, etc don't do well with crossfire, so I've considered the doing a 2 card crossfire instead of a single. This way I disable crossfire and still play the games. Legitimate worry or what?

Also, I'm willing to wait a little bit for the prices to drop, or newer versions of the card to come out (ie the 1GB version of the 4870's)

If your monitor can support high res, there is no reason not to get the 4870x2 if you can afford it. It will show its worth even more then the XSP is enabled, which AMD claims is another 10-15% more improvement when compared to 2x 4870s in crossfire since it increases bandwidth from .9gbs between cards using the crossfire bridge to almost 6gb/s.

Even in crysis, which has always favored nvidia, the 4870x2 pulls a playable 30-40fps at 1920 res with 16xAA(without XSP)!! That has been unheard of until now.

actually from what i have heard they are making a 2GB version but i doubt that will help at all. 1Gb seems to be the hot spot. And yes i presume they will, ATI has always made 1Gb models so im sure they will do the same for a 4870.

Hi guys, theres something i cant understand..(sorry my english)

the fact of the 9800 GX2 have 1GB of memory size, and the HD 4870 just 512MB, doesnt it count? looks like not, but i cant understand why??

everyone recomends the HD 4870, like the memory size is just useless! but it is the double of the size, its suppose to be important no?

i know the hardware is new, and better, its obivious since everyone get crazy whit the new card, but still, the gx2 have the double memory size, whats that mean any way??

i am in doubt, since i was about to buy this computer:

Q9450

Striker II formula

Evga 9800 gx2...

but now i dont know, can someone explain me why everyone ignore the memory size?

tanx =)
