s0rd3z Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 I'm just curious if anyone has any knowledge or suggestions in this area. I am trying to find some decent software, that is not over complicated, that I can do multiple tracks on. My major issues so far has been lag for lack of a better term. Basically what I'm recording ends up a second behind what I hear, so it makes it hard to follow a pre recorded metronome track or anything like that. I'll explain my setup, and that should help if anyone has any knowledge in this area. I have a Br8 eight track recorder, it's made to record on zip disks but the zip drive is busted. I have tried to replace it with about 8 different zip drives, 100's, 250's et cetera. The system will not boot fully with anything but the original drive in it, hence my reason for wanting software. What I do is use the Br8 for effects and because it has the appropriate jacks for guitar, bass, microphone and all that. I use the line outs through an RCA to 1/8th inch jack y splitter which goes into my sound card. The sound card is an audigy SE and that may be the problem right there perhaps. Anyway this is where I am stuck, I have the capability to play and practice, but recording is not possible due to the audio lag i'm receiving. I haven't tried much software at this point, I didn't really want to commit to anything at this point. But I guess i'm asking for any recommendations or technical advice regarding this. Is it the sound card? The setup? Or am I just going about it all wrong? Thanks in advance for any advice any might have. hardnrg Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 the latency between input signal and recording time is because the Audigy SE doesn't support ASIO (and is functioning in MME mode)... ASIO is developed by Steinberg to provide low-latency audio playback/recording... you can sometimes get near the same performance using DirectX, but ASIO is much more widely supported even the regular version of the Live 5.1 and Audigy 1 and 2 support ASIO using the kX drivers... I'm fairly sure the Audigy2 ZS and X-Fi cards support ASIO with the regular Creative drivers whatever you decide to get, whether a general card or music production card/interface, it needs ASIO support
s0rd3z Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 Ok I have heard of that, but did not know it might be possible to use that type of driver with the sound cards I have. (I unknowingly assumed that was a Mac type driver for low latency) Cause I also have a soundblaster live 5.1 kicking around somewhere besides just the audigy card. Gonna do some searching around about the ASIO and compatible drivers for the sound cards I got. It's nothing important that I have to do, would just give me something else to eat up free time with. And multi-tracking guitars can be a good fun waste of an afternoon. Thanks for the advice Hardnrg, sound stuff like this just isn't my fortay. hardnrg Posted August 6, 2008 Posted August 6, 2008 As long as it's the retail Live 5.1 and not the OEM (aka Dell) Live 5.1 Digital, it can work using ASIO timing, when using the kX drivers...
s0rd3z Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 (edited) Found a ASIO4ALL driver that i'm going to try in regards to this. It doesn't replace your current driver just works in correlation with your software as long as you have a WDM sound driver installed. I also read a bit about those kx drivers too, so if the ASIO4ALL don't pan out that's another option. Hopefully this will solve my latency woes, and I can use the good speakers on my HTPC as monitors. Again thanks for the tip man.
