CrackHead Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 (edited) I was wondering what aftermarket heatsink would ya'll recommend for my Intel Core2 Duo CPU E8400. I ask as because my temps seem a little high for a non overclocked system; 40*C Idle - 53*C Load. I'm using the stock heatsink with with Arctic Silver 5. I've tried resetting it a couple times now and have seen no improvement. Its been so long since I have had to buy an aftermarket heatsink that I haven't the faintest idea what works these days. To make matters worse the my Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS4 motherboard has a somewhat robust Silent-Pipe. Any advice or suggestions you can give me would be greatly appreciated... r3d c0m3t Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 When you re-seated the HSF did you cleanse both surfaces and apply new paste every time you did so? Did you remove the thermal paste from the stock HSF? Also, if you go aftermarket, the Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme is the best air cooler on the market right now. It is somewhat tall, so make sure you have a large enough case to house it. They also have a tendancy to come with slightly warped bases so you may have some lapping to do: http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=81238 Notice I also opted for an additional fan attacked to my heatsink to suck in the air. I honestly believe that alone was good for a 5-7 degree drop. I used a Scythe S-Flex fan. The True comes with fan clips, but they can be a pain to install. I may also be adding another fan to the other side of mine to pull the air out. Just make sure you have the fan installed the right direction. When I lapped my heatsink, I wasn't paying attention and put my fan back on backwards A shorter option to the 120 is a Noctua NH-12F like I used on a friends rig: http://forums.overclockersclub.com/index.php?showtopic=81669 http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=produkte&lng=en It was about an inch shorter and I was able to put a fan on the side panel to aid in the cooling. So far, it's keeping his rig in the 30-33 range at idle and in the 50-57 range under load. I used Arctic Silver 5 on his. The Noctua's base on his was copper and came perfectly flat. No lapping necessary. The heatsink you choose will all depend on the size of your case and how much room you have to work with. I have a full copper cooler now so I'm still being stubborn about getting the TRUE but I know it's the best so I'll come around. CrackHead Posted July 31, 2008 Posted July 31, 2008 (edited) Thanks for all your suggestions, based upon my needs of a cooler that is slightly better than the stock Intel one I was thinking of something of a smaller profile. I feel that heatsinks of such magnitude like the ones y'all recommended seem to be more cooling than necessary (overkill). Do you guys know of any others you can suggest? Seems to be the best performing for the smaller HSF's like that, simple install, and relatively cheap price. Arctic Freezer 7 Pro This HSF in my opinion is overrated in the budget market, it's not that it's a bad product, it's just not as good as some others in the same price bracket, but everybody knows it so it keeps getting recommended? This is a far superior HSF for pretty much the same money? Build quality superior to the Arctic, better packaging, better fan and better performance.
