Need Help With First Oc Pls

As the topic says, I want to jump into my first overclock. I am not looking to be overly aggessive, I would be happy to take my proc to a nice and stable 3.6ghz-3.8ghz from the stock 3ghz. I am using an Arctic Pro7 for air cooling. Again, I do not want to risk upping teh voltage to high, so that is why I am asking for help here. Can you guys give me some advice on safe settings?

what power supply do you have?

Anyways do you know anything about overclocking? You should read up some guides, there's a sticky on the forums on how to overclock Intel processors. There's also this other one that is a personal favorite:

Read those. Then when you have a general idea about the FSB, the Multiplier, the formula involved in overclocking, and ram download a couple of programs (free) called:

OCCT

Prim95

SuperPI

Core Temp, HWMonitor, Speedfan (all used to check the temperature of the cpu, and gpu)

CPUZ

 

The cyb3rglitch tutorial lists these tools, and tell you what they do.

When you really want to push your CPU to a higher clock, thats where the ram timings, dividers, and voltages come in. Thats also when the heat starts to rise so always check your temps. A cpu's "danger zone" is 60C. And if anything goes wrong when you cant boot into windows, or even into the BIOS, use the escape plan by reseting your CMOS, the cyb3rglitch guide goes over that as well.

 

So just read up on that and then try it out. When you are ready to overclock and once you start rasing the FSP go in small increments of 5, and when you are nearing your goal which is really close to 4GHz i suggest you raise the FSB by 3.

Need to know also what temps you are getting at idle(normal) and max load(100% CPU usage) now with your current cooler, download OCCT install it and then go into the options settings and set the max load temp to something like 60C so it will shut itself off if it hits that temp, then run it on the infinite setting for about 20 minutes and tell us how hot it gets.

 

Heat is your biggest concern, 60C isn't the max for your CPU but its what we all try and keep our CPU's under for safety sake. I run one of those coolers on my second Rig and although it won't break any OC'ing records its still a nice little cooler and in theory it should get you to your goal of 3.6Ghz depending on what temps you are starting from at idle.
