Black Or Normal? Amd 6400.

Recommended Posts

In living in Jamaica so temps are usualy 30C+ on a average day, but doesnt usualy go lower. In going to England on holiday (I used to live there) Ill be fitting 2 120mm fans and other fans which will add up to 100cfm in and 100cfm out, is this good? Ill also be buying a SApphire HD 4850 + AMD x2 6400, should I get a black edition plus a cooler (which cooler) or the normal with stock cooler, I wont be overclocking it too much, just thw AM2 boost as I dont want to shorten its life :P Im only 14 so I dont realy know that much about software im more of a hardware person lol.

I may want to overclock in the future however, should i get the black or normal, if black which cooler i'd only want to be paying

The AC Freezer 64 is cheap and does a decent job. Tbh upgrading to intel would be the best move but it just depends on wether you can afford to during this trip. Adding 100cfm in and out is great depending on the noise increase, though at 30+ you probably need some major airflow.

Those black editions have an unlocked multiplier, but they still oc like crap. I would just buy that and any decent cooler from thermalright or somebody with a good reputation, Mine only cost $23 a couple years ago. You might be able to get an ultra for the same price now, or Zalman is good. But don't expect much ocing out of any of the latest amd's. They really suck at ocing. That's why i bought the fastest one and just leave it @ stock so it don't get too hot. They suck up electricity too.

I just read comp dudes replay after i typed this, and i wish I'd gone with an intel also. But i didn't mkention it because i assumed he already had an am2 platform mobo. And i was thinking about getting 1 of those arctic freezer pros myself. Heard they were great. But mine does it's job ok.

in my opinion...

I would get the 5000 Black Edition....

the 6400 Black or not is 3200mhz in stock form and may not get much more than 3.4ghz on air...but being said that almost all 5000 Black edition CPUs will hit 3.4ghz on less voltage than the 6400 will...

they all will hit 3.2ghz on 1.35v regardless...

I prefer Zalman coolers like the 9500/9700 series but there are alot of coolers that work just as well for cheaper...

but on the Black Edition CPUs you just change the multiplier and leave everything else alone....or you can play with the HTT and see how far you can get it....almost all of the Brisbane series CPUs I have will hit 3.4ghz with the exception being the 3600 which hits 3.2ghz

Good point Doc...Ive often wondered if my 6400+ is just an oc'ed 5000+. It takes an experienced oc'er like you to get those clocks. Jackson and i have one thing in common here it seems. He's young, a bit inexperienced in ocing, doesn't seem very interested in doing so, and I'm older and tired of it...lol. That's why i got the fastest one they made at stock.

Very true man....

but with the Black Edition CPU it's really not overclocking...as it boots basically anywhere you set the multiplier of the CPU (usually 16 tops)

it's really brainless work...set it and go...the overclocking really starts after setting the multi and moving on to other settings...lol

my 5000BE will do a brainless 3.4ghz on just a multi switch (17x200) and 1.45vcore

but you do gain more performance clocking it the old fashion way via HTT...;)

go for that one....

or if you can find a Artic Cooling Freezer64...those are cheap too...;)

EDIT: you know in all actuality you wont need much more than stock cooling....I have the factory Foxconn/Opteron 939 heatsink on my 5000BE and it keeps it at 40c loaded...all I did was mod another (thicker) 80mm fan on it...still quiet and still hooked up to the fan control via the bios....

those are pretty nice to use and if you can find one of those cheap i would try that...most can be had for like 5.00-15.00 each in forums in the forsale section....I have got 2 of them in use and both work very well...

I have the other one on my mother-in-laws rig and it's dead silent...you cannot hear her PC at all...quiet like a Dell dude but faster
