9800 Sli Questions

Alright, another topic by me, here goes.

 

I want to go SLI, I have a 9800 gtx ocx by bfg, should I get another one of those, or would it just be more worth it to get a regular 9800 gtx?

 

I know that the faster card downclocks to the slower card, but is it worth it?

 

 

Also, another question, Can I put in a 9800 gtx+ ? And how would that affect performance?

What resolution do you game at?

 

Not sure about the 9800GTX+ (is it even out yet?) It might work if the the only difference between the cards is the manufacturing method...might not. Who knows?

Why not just get another regular 9800gtx and flash the bios of the slower card, so both are oc'ed and you won't lose any mgh. Radodrill has a great guide posted in the guides section. I followed to the "t" and it worked great for me.

Just make sure the new card can run at the OC clocks before you flash. You should have no problems with any of those options

You guys bring up a good point, since most (if not all 9800 GTX OC's) are done with stock fans, I think I'll make myself another GTX OCX >=)

 

I just gotta be careful.

 

Thank you all for the helpful comments and that link, Aw well, here goes more money on my rig. I'm gonna hate seeing my electricity bill after this new card goes in.

Well before you do that what resolution do you play at. it might not be worth it if you play on a low res.

Couple answers to ya:

- No, 9800GTX+ will not SLI with a vanilla GTX. Tried it in my rig and no go.

- You won't see much of a dif in SLI scaling perf by OCing, so I'd skip the flashing option and run at default clocks, but...

...Not sure about where you're from), but the OCX is pretty cheap here in Can ($260) and is basically only $16 more than the cheapest GTX. Def worth paying the dough for the speed, if pricing is similar.

yep...gotta be the same model card and speeds. You can oc to match the speeds. Bios #'s don't matter from the many posts I've been digging up. same card, bfg+xfx or evga, as long as it's the same model# and clock speeds. it's fine. Flashing hinders the oc'ing ability i hear.

Quick update, grabbed another OCX, put em in SLI and now i'm ready to start rolling blackouts in my town because of my computers power requirements.

 

Anyway, SLI isn't anything really special, doesn't give too much in some games. Though my rig should be sorta future proof, and I hope i'll be able to run Far cry 2 which is all that matters. Ever.

Damian poses a good question. What resolution are you running at? Sli and powerful gfx cards do a lot better with a larger screen. If you're only using a 19" monitor you won't see much gain in performance at all, if any. But if you have a 22" or larger widescreen you will definatly see some improvement. You can activate the sli indicator bar in the driver CP to watch how much or how often sli is being utilized during a game or benchies.

 

Just a suggestion; you could put your monitor in your sig. Also that's a really nice cpu you got there. I bet it will feed those oc'ed gtx's a lot better with a nice oc. I've seen those things hit 3.6ghz easy. By the way, nice setup you got.

overclocked voltmodded SLI gives me massive 3D performance at 1920x1200 and my system is more loaded than probably almost everyone on this forum and uses only ~563W at the highest load I could think of:
