AMD vs. Intel Architectural Debate

Recommended Posts

The only thing amd has going for it on the processor front is mem bandwidth.

Here you can read about Hypertransport, that's what I am talking about in this thread.

The SB600 isn't that good though and may limit performance. SB750 is better if that I have read is true

Ok, and as you know if you are below the limit of the FSB then Intel is a bit faster. You need to raise the graphic above the FSB limit.

Then find some test results that do exceed the FSB limit.

If you can't, then suggest a situation that would.

The main problem with this debate as I see it, is that you seem to be claiming that differences in architecture allow the AMD platform to outperform Intel's in certain situations (namely gaming), but have so far not presented any convincing evidence that this can be produced anywhere outside of a server application environment.

Sorry, this thread was first from one test done here on OCC (here it is: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/intel_q9450/ )

The AMD took 9 out of 36 tests.

Some of those scores are so close that margin of error has to be considered.

AMD does alright in gaming but its not number one and anyone that says so is a complete fool.

I love AMD but when it comes to gaming I will stick with my Intels.

The only time you'll see AMD coming ahead is if you write a program that relies very heavily on core-to-core interaction. You *might* see the Intel setup saturate the FSB trying to keep the data flowing between the cores and this *might* lead to the AMD chips winning out in the end.

I work with massively parallel systems and programs daily and this scenario isn't very common at all (at least with today's applications).

It seems strange to me that you would provide a links to, firstly our own testing, which I am already fully aware of (I commented on the Phenom's performance in the review discussion thread) and secondly to an article you have already linked to previously in this thread and that hardnrg already posted an adequate rebuttal to.

How can a much slower processor win any test?

If your answer is "gpu is limiting perfromance" it is not the only reason as I see it. All tests that I have seen shows the pattern, even this test http://news.firingsquad.com/hardware/amd_p...nce/default.asp

One ATI HD4870 is one VERY fast card, it will not bottleneck the system at those resolutions. The reason the reviewer gives to not go higher isn

Well then you don't believe me, people have different opinions. The test isn’t that important for me, I am more interested in how hardware works and have read a bit about it. These tests just confirm what I have read. If I am right more and more people will see it because games will be more complicated, they will scale to smaller threads and GPU's will be able to handle more I/O.

Speculation as to what will happen in the future again is just that, speculation, and is something that I tend not to get too involved in.

I am not speculating, but in order to make others understand they need to know what
