Computer won't start

Recommended Posts

Alright so recently I had some problems with the computer in my sig. I brought it into a tech shop, they diagnosed that the motherboard was dead. Since socket 939 is so hard to find and so expensive nowadays I figured I'd just go ahead and upgrade my CPU/mobo/RAM. I replaced my current parts with:

OCZ Platinum XTC PC2-6400 4GB 2X2GB DDR2-800 CL5-4-4-15 DDR2 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L ATX LGA775 P35 1333FSB 1PCI-E16 3PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 Sound GBLAN Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Duo E6550 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.33GHZ 1333FSB 4MB Retail

I'm no expert but I've assembled a computer before, the one I have was chosen and built by me. I thought I'd be able to do it again no problem. I switched the old parts for the new, double checked that everything was alright. Everything seems good. However, when I try to power it on....nothing happens. I've been trying to troubleshoot what's wrong, trying a bunch of things. I reseated everything, triple-checked all the connections, tried the RAM in different slots, etc etc. Still nothing when I hit the power button. I could really use some suggestions because I've been computerless for quite some time now, and to finally get new parts and STILL not have a working computer really sucks the big one. How likely is it that the motherboard is faulty? Or did I just make a rookie mistake somewhere?

Are you using the same PSU you had with the old setup? The PSU is a very common source of problems when it doesn't power on.

Another thing that might be worth looking into is to check the cabling on the case switch (or try shorting the pins on the MB header).

I just tried a minimum build, no luck there. I checked the mobo power connectors and i have the 4-pin and the 12-pin plugged in. I think that's all it needs, it doesn't mention anything else in the manual. What's weird is that my PSU was working in my other computer, and at the tech place they even checked the voltage on it in front of me and they said it was fine.

As has been said numerous times in many threads throughout the forums; just because a PSU can be jumpstarted and the voltages check out under no load does not mean that it will run under load.

did you check the front panel connectors for the case switch are round the right way on the pins? and check also the pins on the 24 pin connector of the motherboard and your PSU aren't bent out of shape. Then do what Kingfisher said and give the cmos a good long clear of about an hour or so.

Well last night I brought my computer to a family friend's house. We ran a bunch of tests and we got results when we tried running the system outside of my case. It booted up. We think it may have been an extra mounting screw I had neglected to remove that was causing a short. Or it may have been the fact that it wasn't running under full load and the power supply really is dying. If that is the case I apologize and feel like quite an idiot for not listening to you guys sooner. Either way, thank you for all the help so far. I'll let you know how it ends up.

Alright everything is set up and running. It's been going all day with no problems. Tried gaming a bit, everything is good. Looks like the power supply is fine. I'm very glad for that because I didn't want to put even MORE money into this system right now. Thank you for all the help everyone.
