New platters for the sweet spot @TechReport

...By far the biggest benefit of the SE16's new platters comes in the form of performance potential. The 320GB platters boast an areal density 28% higher than that of Western Digital's 250GB discs, giving the drive head access to substantially more data over shorter physical distances. Increases in areal density can dramatically improve sequential transfer rates...
Twice the Platters, Twice the Fun @ Anandtech

... Even at this point in testing, the WD Caviar SE16 640GB drive already has our tentative recommendation for users looking for a larger capacity drive for a gaming or audio/video/digital image workstation...

Low Price and Great Performance @ ExtremeTech

...Western Digital's 640GB hard drive offers superior cost-per-gigabyte in a 320GB per platter hard drive that performs quite well. It's simply the best deal in hard drive storage today.

Bought mine last night, we'll see how it holds up to my abuse. After rebate this is the best price/GB for a WD drive in that class on newegg. Comes out to ca 5.3GB per dollar.

Why? All my drives are WD and none have any issues, ask doc how much I use my drives. I got this very drive last Friday, and it's only got 120GB left free for example. I like this drive, very good read/write speeds and no reallocations. Not like it really matters, the sale ended yesterday as far as I know.

Hey Reel...how do you like your new WD HD now that you've had it awhile?

NEWEGG has it at the deal price in your OP and I'm thinking about picking up a couple for some RAID action later down the pike.

I like it a lot, it's the fasted and biggest drive I have, so that's nice. I installed it in my HTPC case and I can't hear it, haven't had a single problem. I'd definitely buy it again.

Yes, not bad, esp. for a single drive. That does it...I'm pulling the trigger on one of these for sure, no way I'm going with another raptor when you can get that kind of performance out of a "storage" drive at that pricepoint.

Dang, the "deal" is off again...hopefully it will be back on the weekend.
