LOL should I delid this?

Recommended Posts

was running orthos on my 3.05 oc and core 1's temp's sky rocket. they're always 5-7 degrees higher than core 0, but when orthos is running, the difference is 17 or higher.

i know core 0 is making great contact, its idle temp is about 23-25, whilst core 1's is 29-32 respectively.

i'll try mounting the waterblock differently as well... but is this normal, i've seen temp differences, but not that badly..

while I can never recommend removing the IHS, sometimes you just...have to (either curiosity or to reduce temps that extra 5C or so)

the problem usually lies in how the IHS makes contact with the core. More than a few guys cut off the IHS only to re-apply the TIM and then put the IHS back on to protect the core. Personally if I'm going to cut off the IHS it's going to stay off ;)

I tried to reattach my IHS and idle temps were like 42C, so I just took it back off. Its just because its really touchy with my clip on xp-90, like if I bump it a couple times while messing around the temps go higher then they were by a couple degrees. If I do a fresh re seat of the cooler they will stay low if i dont mess with it

clip-on coolers + bare cpu = ugly troubles (cracked cores etc) usually but I've bolted on the XP-90 brackets to the socket with a chip in the socket myself (ruined a cpu doing it once though haha)

I think the problems you are facing speed is the fact that it IS a clip-on cooler. You won't see issues like that with a true bolt-thru (always recommended for bare cpu's)

clip-ons have to be modified usually too to work. i had my delidded opty 165 working great with a clip on a64 freezer. works just fine, except the base of the 64 cooler looks like crap, shoulda lapped it, but it gets 25C nowl ol so now worries.

as for my water block its bolt style. i'll try tightening the bolts differently, maybe it's sitting slightly crooked, or the grease isnt on good enough.

thanks for the tips :D

with my clipon I just clip it to the bracket then screw it down carefully, 1/2 turn at a time per side. I hold it steady/centered while I get each side started. but like angry said if you slip it could be very bad. Thats why I tried to put my lid back on, using AS5 underneath and on top, but the temps were very high so I gave up. I thought about getting a Tuniq tower but not sure if thats recomended either, then i could allways use it when i end up going Intel.

idle temps are a bit better after i backed off a few mhz, load still is crazy wonkers. like core 0 will be in mid 40s, core1 high 50's.

i've heard about temp differences like mine some... wasnt sure if it's just the cores, or if its the ihs/thermal paste under them

getting a opteron 165 tomarrow hopefully to replace this with soon anyways.
