Guest r3d c0m3t Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 First off, let me start by saying that if you've never played any of the previous three installments then Nero (the new guy) might actually be both appealing and downright cool to you, but if you have played all three or any of the three before then you may suffer the same experiences as I have. I'm not writing this to displace Nero in any form whatsoever, nor am I writing to displace Capcom for wanting to liven up the ongoing saga with a new character, I'm simply writing this as a review and insight for those who wish to buy the game, or those who already have the game, and/or an opinion about the series in general. Nero resembles Dante in many ways, especially his attitude, he's cocky, brash, and quick to settle disputes with his sword, the Red Queen. Nero being a member in the Holy Order of Knights, which are basically an established group of individuals whom worship Sparda, the Legendary Dark Knight himself. Once you begin to play with Nero and you work your way up to buying majority of the available abilities for himself, Red Queen, and Blue Rose (his six shooter) you find yourself inconceivably wanting more, and what's more is that while Nero does in fact freshen things up, he also leaves you hanging. Throughout the entire game (Missions 1-20, seven of which aren't played by Nero, but rather Dante) you only acquire a single weapon that's new, and that, to me is basically saying "Nero doesn't deserve any kind of maturing diversity." On the other hand you have Dante, the one and only, the main character for the entire series itself and once you begin retracing the now held captive Nero, you almost immediately get one new weapon after another - four in grand total. What? Four new weapons for a character whom for once the game isn't based upon, and only one new weapon for the character whom the game is based around? I don't what you're thinking about, but that has "We know Dante is better, and we want you to know it, too." written all over it. Oh, I forgot to mention that Nero also has another weapon at his disposal, his right arm, otherwise known as the "Devil Bringer." This acquirement allows you to snatch and grab, and essentially pound the hell out of anyone you so choose to, and it becomes ever more exciting to watch once your Devil Trigger is active. In the end you're left wondering "Why?" It's possible I stand alone in this judgment, and if you've played the game or any of the previous three and have seen videos of DMC 4, tell me what you thought of it and the previous game, a comparison if you so desire. Fogel Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 I wrote some initial comments in this thread. I have not finished it because I keep getting distracted by Sins of Solar Empire and I'm also replaying a lot of stages to get a better score. So from that perspective i guess my views don't vary much from your initial ones. I am having fun playing as Nero. That arm adds an interesting dynamic to combos that Dante never had. I wrote more in that other topic. It's possible I stand alone in this judgment, and if you've played the game or any of the previous three and have seen videos of DMC 4, tell me what you thought of it and the previous game, a comparison if you so desire. Far as the other DMCs, I'd say only DMC1 was better. Never played DMC2 tho I own it (sad I know), but I heard it was too easy and was rather a let down. So I tried DMC3 as I heard they brought back the difficulty... and oh yeah they did. Tho not in a fun way. It was just flat out cheap. The very first boss, dumb butt dog, could take away something like almost ½ of your life bar. I'm sitting there thinking... "and this is the first boss?" ...wtf. Than it has that annoying trait of asking you if it can dumb down the difficulty after the 2nd defeat ...well that's just patronizing and annoying. (STOP DOING THAT!!!) Before I quit playing the game I did try it dumbed down and it was REALLY dumbed down. The other issue was if you lost to a boss, you had to go through the stage all over again and it was tough enough that if you weren't on top of your game you'd be going into that boss fight without enough hit points. Bascially the default difficulty should have been the "Dante Must Die" difficulty DMC1 had or one step below. I think DMC3 had 'some' potential but it was a bust. DMC4's difficulty is more in line with what it should be. Once you beat a stage you have the skills you need to do the stage again with no problems ...it's not dependant on being lucky that enemies off the screen aren't hitting you. I may even go so far as to say it 'MAY' be a tad too easy on Devil Hunter mode. I know I was expecting to get my butt kicked more, but after I beat that initial boss I been flying thru. If someone loved DMC1 and they wanted another DMC game than it would have to be DMC4 before 2 or 3. That is depressing to hear. I was looking forward to seeing what kind of weapons he would get. In the end you're left wondering "Why?" I don't get your question at the end of this. It sounds like you are complimenting the game until that question. ("Why?") I do have a question though, have you found effective uses of rev'ing up your sword? I still haven't figured that one out. When i do get it to work it sends the enemy flying on the other end of the screen before I can do a combo.
Guest r3d c0m3t Posted March 6, 2008 Posted March 6, 2008 The "Why?" was aimed toward Nero only having four weapons that you'll use throughout the entire game, and what makes matters worse, Yamato is only usable in Devil Trigger. As for the Exceed Gauge, you're supposed to rev it up until all three slots have been "exceeded". It's of minimal use to be completely honest, but once you level it up to the third level (not revving, I mean using the proud souls to purchase or learn Exceed 2 and 3) it becomes a bit more enticing, basically because the attack exceeds as much as it's been exceeded. I'll be 100% honest in saying so, once I finished the game I was so happy to be able to play with Dante on the fly (whether it be Bloody Palace or the seven missions you play as him) I dare not even consider using Nero anymore. To me, Nero was just a wasted effort, or maybe Capcom just wanted to "show him around" so to speak, and his skills will mature in the next installment, if he is to make an appearance. As for DMC 3, I agree with Cerebrus being a bit on the difficult side for the first Boss, but DMC 3 returned a lot what DMC brought to the table and thankfully ignored whatever DMC 2 brought. I mean part 2 can be a fun game once you get into it, but it's just too easy and quite simplistic. If you have the Special Edition of DMC 3, I'd recommend going through the game (if you haven't done so already) and playing through the missions again, but playing with Vergil, whom is absolutely kick-butt from the get-go. Fogel Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 If I ever plug my PS2 back in, I'll give it another go but I have zero desire to purchase the SE of dmc3. Poor save spots and having to rehash the same damn stage all over again just to fight the boss wore on me. I think its over hyped personally.
