wevsspot Posted March 2, 2008 possibly coming from a whining cap. best thing to do is as already suggested. take the board outside of the case and find the offender. if it is a screaming cap you may be able to subdue the noise by putting some silicon around it. TheReaper Posted March 2, 2008 What is a whining cap? what component it on? It's an electronic noise... ~You know that noise you get from TV's? hard to describe.
TheReaper Posted March 2, 2008 It only happens after POST.
ReelFiles Posted March 2, 2008 Maybe it's related to how much load is on the PSU or after it initials another component.
p0tter Posted March 2, 2008 possibly coming from a whining cap. probably it on the videcard, under load w/ heat caps can whine

wevsspot Posted March 2, 2008 What is a whining cap? A screeching capacitor or integrated circuit somewhere on the motherboard.
TheReaper Posted March 2, 2008 "probably it on the videcard, under load w/ heat caps can whine" I had thought that but it starts immediately after POST with the v card at stock.
wevsspot Posted March 2, 2008 Do you have any way of trying to capture the sound and let us hear it? I've read some reports of the fan on the 8800 (G92) cards making contact with the plastic shroud causing a squealing or screeching noise at certain RPM's. But due to the extremely high frequency you are reporting, I still think the noise is electronic in nature.
TheReaper Posted March 2, 2008 Yes it is more like the sound of an old TV, that high pitch resistor/valve sound.
TheReaper Posted March 3, 2008 Also it now happens before and during POST whereas it only started post POST before, it starts as soon as power is on. So must be either as you said screaming cap which is what I now think or the PSU. How do you discover which cap/resistor etc is screaming? I tried recording the sound but it doesn't come out on playback. The best description I can give is like when you have an old TV set, you turn it on and straight away there's that sound (not the news) like transistors/resistors/valves almost like ultra hight pitched slow morse code but MOSTLY at a single freq. with the odd differed tone. wevsspot Posted March 3, 2008 Did you ever get the board outside of the case so you could try and pinpoint exactly where on the board the noise is coming from?
