wingspar Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 What I am about to describe does not happen all the time. It may only happen once, or maybe twice a week. This is XP SP2 Home. When I shut down the computer, which I do every night before going to bed, I will usually just walk out of the room, and come back later to turn the surge protector off after the computer has shut down. Once in a while, I will come back a half an hour later to find the blue screen that says “Windows is Shutting Down” still on, and I turn the whole thing off at the surge protector. Next morning, it boots up fine. Twice now in the last month, the latest being last night, I told the computer to shut down. Instead, it rebooted. When the computer comes back up, I tell it to shut down, and it just hangs on that blue screen, and I must use the power button on the surge protector. What might be causing this? It’s sporadic, and does not affect the performance of the computer. I see it as a mild irritation.
suedenim Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Have a look in your Event Viewer logs and see if you notice any names being repeated that are causing critical errors around the time you try shutdown. there is also a tweak for XP to force it terminate all apps on shutdown after a set time. I'd think about this option after you look at the logs.
wingspar Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Thanks for the reply. I could find no names being repeated that are causing critical errors around the time I shutdown. There are some critical errors around the time I shutdown, but it’s never the same thing, and I don’t know if those are the times XP wouldn’t shutdown. Guess I’ll have to keep notes as to when this happens for the next few times, then check the logs again. How would I force XP to terminate all apps on shutdown after a set time? Angry_Games Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 most of the time when this happens to one of the comps here it just means that some program's task was never stopped (ie like when you see your task manager box pop up and say something like "NOD32 waiting for task to end" etc) Rebooting instead...could be possibly you accidentally telling it to reboot and then it went through the slow shutdown and rebooted (because a task got stuck for a little bit), or it might just be Windows being retarded and rebooting instead of shutting down. This isn't all that abnormal, especially if it's only happened a few times. I've seen this and the stuck-at-shutdown bit on and off for about 7 years now with Windows XP
paulktreg Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 It happens with me ocassionally and I have never got to the bottom of it. I just wait for HDD activety to stop, press reset and switch off. May not be the way to go but it's never caused a problem just a "mild irritation"! Regards Paul
wingspar Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Nice to know this is nothing unusual, and kind of common, but since I built this rig in the spring of 2006, this has never happened till recently. It starts up, and runs fine next time, so I haven’t been too worried about it. Looking at the Event Viewer Logs, there seems to be no consistency as to when it happens, nor the program that causes it. I’m pretty sure I didn’t click on the re-boot button instead of the shutdown button. That’s only happened twice, and within the last month. Never seen that before. For the heck of it, I’m going to keep a hand written diary of times and programs from the Event Viewer Logs for a while to see if there is some kind of pattern. Thanks for the info. Angry_Games Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 better than that %#@$#@ DFI CFX3200 that used to just randomly start booting up without me being near it...it loved to wait about 10 minutes after I shut it down to power itself back on...and ya wonder why I got fired from DFI lol
Guest Lavell Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Angry, you have a real sense of humor. I personally thought the DFI RDX200 was a piece of s#*t. It was plagued with the same problems you speak of and then some. I was quick to jump on the CFX3200 bandwagon. As weird as it may seems, to this day (other than the occasional freeze-ups), my CFX3200 is still going strong. I'm very happy with it. better than that %#@$#@ DFI CFX3200 that used to just randomly start booting up without me being near it...it loved to wait about 10 minutes after I shut it down to power itself back on...and ya wonder why I got fired from DFI lol
