DIY Street Fund Raising

I'd like to suggest a fund raising idea for DIY Street. I know it doesn't solve the underlying problems but if it eases the funding problems it may give people (A-G et al) more time to work on the site content and other issues rather than worry about were the site fees are coming from every three months.

The first problem may be the US gaming laws - not sure. The idea comes from the local pub (bar) raising funds to support its games teams (pool, darts.etc).

The DIY-Street 500 (or whatever the number) Club.

Any willing member of DIY Street undertakes to donate $12.00 per year as a membership fee. This would then enter them into a monthly draw and the chance to win one of three prizes every month. If you could get 500 willing participants then the monthly prizes would be as follows: 1st $200, 2nd $100 & 3rd $50.00 with $150 going to DIY-Street.

Just an idea. Could be done via Paypal or similar and would of course depend on trust, somebody with the time to run it and the belief that the draw would be done honestly.

What do you think?

Regards

Paul

That sounds like a pretty kewl idea.

How about $20 each using the same goal of 1st $200, 2nd $100 & 3rd $50.00 with $150 going to DIY-Street.

25 guys should be easy.

I do like the contest/rewards idea.

I would take the money that is given from the membership fee and use it for hardware to review. Then every month give away that piece of hardware. Heck you could let the members pick the hardware to be review and given away. Take a monthly pole or somthing for the hardware. This way we bring in money and put a small fix towards the site.

p.s. we need to change the look of this place. It looks too old!

We mentioned this a few months back as an idea to get more members involved with hardware reviews and content....we offered to any VIPs wanting to be more helpful that we could get some hardware to be reviewed and intern the members would be able to keep the reviewed hardware But....I think it was mentioned it would still be property of DIY-Street but your to play with...? something like that...

We had NO takers on the idea or never any mention of it after that...

But the bad idea is....if we dont have the money in pocket to pay the server payment how to we get hardware for you to play with....?

While we could be like everyone else and beg for it from manufacturers and sugar coat the review but as A_G said we aint about sugar coating anything or kissing anyones butt to get toys to play with...we give honest reviews for honest products....

A few points/ideas just to keep things moving.

If this idea is in principle agreed to by "the management" then something needs to be done to keep it going. Is it possible to easily PM all registered members of DIY Street to gauge any interest.

Soundx98 I think you have the wrong idea here. It would I think take more like 250 members to contribute to make this idea feasible and keep it going month on month unless you are proposing one off events to fund a particular requirement. If each member agreed to say $20.00 per year then paying the prizes originally suggested would make the Street $67.50 per month.

How many people have a Paypal account?

What if all prize monies had to be used to buy hardware via the Street and the winner agreeing that if said hardware was needed for a review it would be made available to the Street before the winner received it?

  • 3 weeks later...

No takers on this one.

Lets say the forum required a particular piece of hardware for a review. Ask for a donation, to a Paypal account for instance, of X amount of dollars until the required buying price is achieved + worst case postage charges. Buy the hardware, do the review, and by way of a lottery draw award that item to a donator.

What do you think?

well it looks like it is going to be donations vs server shutdown

we have no hardware to give away to VIP donors

we have no staff or users who are willing to write articles etc

we have no money left to pay the server hosting fee so from here on it is donations or no server (either way I suppose is fine with me)

dr_bowtie and crew will be playing the part of PBS/NPR pledge dudes buggin for donations starting today
