Emigrating to Canada

I'm emigrating to Canada, probably autumn this year and I'm certain there will be questions that only residents or frequent visitors can answer. Me the missus and 2 kids are hoping to be able to support ourselves in the Rocky mountains area BC or AL to be determined yet.

 

I might be doing a recon prior to our leaving, depends on cash, new baby etc. and obviously a mobile phone will be in use a lot so what options are available with regards to networks, coverage of my travel zone, costs etc.

 

I know I can get some/all os this off the net but there's nothing like personal recommendations even if it does come with caveats.

 

I will probably add more questions here as time goes by so thanks in advance for helping/humouring a future immigrant.

plus the hockey thing...is actually more important to us than politics (Canada has politicians that are crazier than shithouse rats as well).

 

Canada is one of the most wired countries I think...they had something like 66% roll-out of broadband back when USA had barely 5% roll-out.

 

You pay lots of taxes, but as an Englishman, you already know all about that (it covers all the social stuff like medicine, etc...stuff you already pay for in your home country).

 

It's BITTER xxxxING COLD everywhere except BC, which is of course the most expensive place to live besides Toronto/Montreal/Ottawa.

If you are one who loves internet, i must tell you, be aware of Rogers, (cell phone, cable tv, inet, house phone company), i have the 2nd highest service on their list, capped at 60GB a month, the highest service is capped at i think 100GB a month, and everything is counted, upload / download

As to the paperwork that's all done, apart from child No 2's passport, as we applied over 3 yrs ago. I might get into hockey but I don't give a rats ar*e about soccer its far too commercialised, something I'm willing to turn a blind eye to for motorsports (damn hypocritical, two-faced human weakness). I guess the Canucks love there hockey because its one thing they're generally better at than Yanks when it comes to sports (but I may be wrong on both sides a my research hasn't got to sports).

Whats the house rental market like in Canada? Is it easy to find a 3 bed house to rent for 6 months full/part/no furniture?

 

Any recommendations on vehicles for mountainous regions? Oh and a mid-size car in Canada would be classed as LARGE car over here but I could probably cope with that as you all drive slow over there anyway.

Hard to find decent places that are affordable. Since you're going out west your situation isn't any better as Vancouver always was the most expensive square foot in the country, and now Calgary is catching up since the city has an extensive technological background, and is growing a lot.

I'd imagine that being an american citizen I'd be easier for you, you have to fill out the aplication for a permanent residency, they will evaluate your application based on:

a)language skills(in your case It shouldn't be a problem

b)professional experience

c)education level

d)marital status(I believe married couples have a better chance than single aplicants)

Alberta province is the very example of that...if I'm not mistaken Calgary is on obtic fiber for a while now...the whole city

Make sure you stay away from the prairies !!!! there's no mountains to block the chilling wind...
