stanggt00 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I am getting my new EVGA 8800 GTS 512 MB card on Monday and since it is about time for a fresh install of Win XP anyway I figure what the heck. In preparation of the reinstall I am downloading all the latest drivers and such to my backup drive so my system is back up and running ASAP. I got the latest nForce drivers from Nvidia (as well as the 8800 GTS drivers, lol), the Marvell drivers for ethernet and Creative drivers for my audio. I went to AMD's website looking for the latest CPU driver. I went to Opteron drivers/utilities and so much stuff comes up that I am sure I dont want or need. Can somebody PLEASE help me make sure I get the right drivers before I start the reinstall? Also, I couldnt find the dual core optimizer on AMD's site. If someone could point me in the right direction to make sure my reinstall goes smoothly it will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for helping a geek out. I have been out of the loop for so long and things change so quickly that I am sure you know how easy it is to get behind the curve. :beer
uneedav8 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Most here will probably tell you it runs fine without it but heres a link.... http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=81429
stanggt00 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 That thread was started over 2 years ago. Are the links provided in it current? What about the CPU driver? Is this : AMD Opteron™ Processor with AMD PowerNow!™ Technology Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 the most recent / correct driver? uneedav8 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Yeah, use the latest cpu drivers for the opteron on the AMD site....and use the dual core optimizer from that site or the AMD site under the X2 processor. As you can see....theres a particular way to install it.
jaz Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 You don't need that optomizer. I saw that too, and called amd and they told me NOT to download it and use it unless i am having troubles. Cpu's don't need drivers, or helpers unless there is some kind of incompatibility or other issue crippling your cpu. I have never, ever used that optomizer and never had any problems with my cpu. Are you saying do not install the AMD CPU driver, the Dual Core Optimizer, or both? I will leave the dual core optimizer alone unless I run into trouble. Once setup, I will run OCCT dual core to make sure both processors are running at 100%. If they are not, will I need to Dual Core Optimizer? What about the issues of cool n quiet? I have it disabled in the bios, but how can I be sure it's not running through windows?
radodrill Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 The only time you'd want to install the dual-core optimizer is when upgrading from a single-core to a dual-core processor without doing a clean install of the OS (clean install is best)
stanggt00 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Rado to the rescue again, lol. I should install the driver though, correct?
radodrill Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I personally don't think you'd need CPU drivers; but could be mistaken (not an AMD guru) From what I can tell, the AMD CPU driver merely allows the OS to downclock the CPU based on processing demands. schoolslave Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I always installed it using the method over at XS. Never had an issue with it.
stanggt00 Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 I cant say I have ever follwed the steps listed there, but I have always installed the CPU driver and Dual Core Optimizer. I never had any issues with recognizing both cores, or had issues with gaming. Now, AMD lists the D.C.O. under the X2 processors, but not the Opterons. Is it because Opty's are business class and not your typical desktop gaming computer?
jaz Posted January 5, 2008 Posted January 5, 2008 Call amd and ask them. I bet you get the same answer i did. You don't need it for anything unless you are having problems.
