TheReaper Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 hi all, what happens if a card says on the box it needs minimum 450w PSU with 12v 30a rating but mine is 500w with 12v 16a rating? will it work???
Hemidare Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 What power supply is it? Yours might have 2 rails? If it has 2 rails you might be over the recommended ampage. Is what is listed in your signature the name of the PSU?
TheReaper Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 yes atx 300x 500watt. it has +3.3,+5,+12,-5,-12,-5vsb below that it says 20a,22a,16a,0.5a,0.8a,2a below that is 130w max, 9.6w max
Hemidare Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I would say based on the fact that the power supply appears not to have a brand name of anytype that it came with your system in your sig. You would need to have what is on the box 450watt/30 amp PSU. You might get away without it, but i would play it safe and get a proper power supply with the proper ratings. Heres a really good thread on power supplys btw. http://www.diy-street.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73137
momoceio Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 Yeah, I'd really recommend upgrading your PSU. OCZ has some nice 700watt PSUs for about $110...
TheReaper Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I bought all seperate components from a pc fair guy who ran a shop, he recommended all the parts, I found the site for the psu company. www.atxpowersupplies.com
Hemidare Posted December 30, 2007 Posted December 30, 2007 I just looked at a couple on there and it doesnt look like any of them run dual rails. Could be wrong but that power supply does not look like it has the grunt to run the vid card. I have the OCZ 700 watt game xstream and am very happy with it. And like was mentioned above they are'nt all that expensive anymore.

TheReaper Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Oh god oh god oh god, it's just that a good deal has been offered to me for a good graphics card and I was dreading the thought of having to also get a new psu but it's a very decent card so I'll have to go for it. It's 8800gtx
momoceio Posted December 31, 2007 Posted December 31, 2007 Can you take a pic of your PSU? Make sure you get the specification sticker nice and clear so we can read it. I'm guessing it's just one of those knock-off PSUs...rarely will you go to a PC shop and get good recommendations because people like us don't' work there I used to work at a PC shop and everyone there thought that a 350watt PSU was killer and you'd never need anything bigger. They were good at fixing PCs and servers but not good at the high end, enthusiast type stuff. I however keep up on everything so my boss thinks I'm a big geek when I start talking about stuff
