CA64-TC - SATA problems THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Recommended Posts

I have a CA64-TC motherboard with which I have installed:

Tualatin Celeron 1.2GHz (100 mhz fsb)

2 sticks of 128 PC100 & 1 stick of 256 PC100 RAM

Generic DVD-Rom

80 Gig IDE HDD

Floppy Drive

Antec 350Watt(SL350)Smart Power Power Supply

into which I would like to install 4 SATA hard drives with these controllers:

A Maxtor SATA/150 PCI Card

SYBA SY-VIA-150 PCI SATA / IDE Combo Controller Card, Non Raid - Retail [http://www.newegg.com/product/...p?item=N82E16815124022 ]

the only way I can get the unit to boot is to just hook in the maxtor card with one hard drive it boots fine (if i hook in both the PC doesn't get past "Boot from CD: failed" if i hook the two controllers in and hook in the 4 hard drives the PC wont boot past "Boot from CD: failed" then hangs, if i hook in the SYBA card it goes a little further (i see the XP logo - but then it hangs).

without the controllers it boots fine.

the best part is I can boot fine with one sata drive - and then hot swap a second drive and it runs without a problem. :- this is very frustrating.

I'm wondering if it is the bios, my bios line is :

3/26/02 694X 686B 6A6LJD4TC-00

is there a newer bios that would help this out? :- thanks a ton !

I graciously received an email back from AceGoober - THANKS SO MUCH! It said:

What you are experiencing is a conflict between the on-board VIA southbridge and the SATA controllers themselves (which is why I don't recommend using this combination). This, from the information you have provided, is possibly due to an incorrect BIOS setting which would cause an IRQ conflict. ( I.E.: two devices sharing one IRQ).

What I will need from you is a photo of the Advanced BIOS screen, if you can provide it or a typed-out version of it.

Here are the pics:

and a video of the pc booting:

tell me what else you need!

additionally when you say :

Unless someone has any better idea, this issue is unsovable due to the limitations of the board and the latest BIOS which has been implemented.

He will only be able to support 4 physical drives (Optical drives included) on the CA64-TC board.

Unless someone else happens to encounter a solution other than what I have provided then I consider this issue closed.

Thank you so much Ace- He went out of his way to sit on the phone and troubleshoot for about 2 hours - this guy is the man :)
