sparkyftw Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 So until recently, we have had no need for wireless. We have a wired router in our network that is hooked up to the switch. Well now my sister has a laptop, and my grandma has one. My sister bought a wireless router for christmas. My dad being stubborn refuses to replace the wired router with the wireless router. So I have to connect the 2 routers together. I have really no idea how to do this. I know you need to subnet them, and I know the basics of doing that. What is the simplest way (other then replacement) to make these work together. Router: Linksys BEFSX41 Wireless: Linksys WRT54G (wireless-g)
momoceio Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 No subnetting needed...just plug the LAN port of Switch A into the LAN port of switch B. All these home devices are really just switches besides the one WAN port, you can also just plug the WAN port of Switch B (Wireless) into the LAN port of Switch A (wired)...switch A will then serve a DHCP address to the B's WAN port and B will then serve IPs out to it's clients. sparkyftw Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 everytime I have done that, the network goes down.
momoceio Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Ah yea, I forgot that the wireless would serve DHCP addresses out also..stupid me. If you go into the wireless routers config, will it let you disable DHCP? You should still be able to connect the WAN port of the wireless router into the LAN port of the wired router...that should work. Another solution would be to take back the wireless router and get a wireless access point which is what you really want anyway. sparkyftw Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 yeah I think we may just do that. I didn't buy it.
sparkyftw Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 ok here is the setup LAN ---> WAN with a cross over cable and the wireless has DHCP off. My sisters laptop sees the router, but won't connect.
momoceio Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 You probably shouldn't need a crossover cable...most of these newer network devices have auto sensing ports.
sparkyftw Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 I went out and bought a wireless access point. router was taking too long.
momoceio Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 Good, much easier setup. Plug n Pray...
ReelFiles Posted December 29, 2007 Posted December 29, 2007 All you needed to do was disable DHCP on the wireless router and assign a different IP adress to it... and yeah, no cross-over, that's just for direct PC-PC connections. Oh well too late now.
