decon Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Hey all. This Chirstmas I got these http://edbpriser.dk/Products/Listprices.asp?ID=104974 (sorry danish website, shouldn't matter much though) that I would like to add be my existing set of RAM which is 2x of http://edbpriser.dk/Products/Listprices.asp?ID=86124. Now when I try to boot the PC (with all of the RAM modules plugged in) it won't even let me go into the BIOS, it doesn't really boot up. Well sometimes it actually does boot and then it gets to the windows loading screen where it freezes. There seem to be a different timing on the new modules compared to old ones that I have: Old: 512mb PC3200 DDR400 CL=2.5-6-3-3 New: 512mb PC3200 DDR400 CL=2.5-8-4-4 I've tried running with these 3 configs: Old/Old New/New Old/New All of these 3 configs works without any troubles but as soon as I add another 512mb module the thing messes up so: Old/Old/New/New Old/New/Old/New Doesn't work either. What do I have to do to make it work so that I can run with 4x512mb without any problems? Or does the timing mean that it just doesn't work? Sharp Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Hello, What is the pc specification. When buying memory there is always a risk that it may not work with the old modules. For this reason you should never mix different memory modules unless you know that the chips used on both are exactly the same. On the 939 CPU 3 modules will never work. Also when you buy new memory you should find a way to test them. The DFI board has a program called memtest, this is what you should use. Using your old sticks in the orange slots, do the following. GENIE BIOS Setting >DRAM Configuration..................Press Enter = New Menu FSB BUS Frequency....................200 LDT/FSB Frequency Ratio..............AUTO LDT BUS Transfer Width...............16 16 CPU/FSB Frequency Ratio..............AUTO PCI eXpress Frequency................100Mhz K8 Cool 'n' Quiet Support............Disable Cool 'n' Quiet MAX FID...............AUTO CPU VID StartUp Value................Startup CPU VID Control......................AUTO CPU VID Special Control..............AUTO LDT Voltage Control..................1.20 V Chip Set Voltage Control.............1.50 V DRAM Voltage Control.................2.70 V +0.3v if not 3.2v....................Disabled Run MemTest86+.......................Enabled GENIE BIOS Setting >DRAM Configuration DRAM Frequency Set (MHZ).............200 (DRAM/FSB:1/01) Command per clock (CPC)..............Disabled Cas latency (tCL)....................2.5 RAS to CAS delay (tRCD)..............4 Min RAS active time (tRAS)...........8 Row precharge time (tRP).............4 Row cycle time (tRC).................11 Row refresh cycle time(tRFC).........14 Row to Row delay (tRRD)..............2 Write recovery time (tWR)............3 Write to read delay (tWTR)...........AUTO Read to write delay (tRWT)...........AUTO Refresh period (tREF)................1560 Write CAS latency (tWCL).............N/A Odd Divisor Select...................Disabled DRAM Bank Interleave.................Enabled DQS Skew Control.....................Decrease DQS Skew Value.......................0 DRAM Drive Strength..................AUTO DRAM Data Drive Strength.............AUTO Max Async Latency....................6ns Dram Response........................Normal Read Preamble Time...................5ns Idle Cycle Limit.....................AUTO Dynamic Counter......................Enabled R/W Queue Bypass.....................AUTO Bypass Max...........................AUTO 32 Byte Granularity..................Disabled (4 bursts) Save and exit. If the pc boots, let memtest run for 1 pass. If all is ok, turn off. Insert the new modules in the yellow slots. Power the pc and see what happens. If it works memtest should be running. Let memtest run for 6 hours. (as long as possible). If you receive no errors then it is probably ok, try to go into windows.
decon Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 How come I have to set all those DRAM settings? Doesn't the auto feature work properly? Also Write CAS latency (tWCL).............N/A Odd Divisor Select...................Disabled DRAM Bank Interleave.................Enabled These settings aren't around expect for Write CAS latency (tWCL) but I can't set it to N/A
radodrill Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 With certain boards it's quite tricky to get it to run with all the RAM slots populated and only works if you manually define the settings and generally requires all 4 sticks to be matched. Please post your full system specs in your sig so we can be in a better position to assist you.
decon Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Sorry totally forgot Ran the first test, got no errors.
decon Posted December 27, 2007 Posted December 27, 2007 Ran the test with all the modules plugged in and got no errors (one pass) haven't got time for more passes right now but I'll try and mess around with windows for 10 mins before I go to bed (it boots yeh ). Btw I forgot to change DRAM Voltage Control to 2.70 V from 2.60 V, does it matter? Will it make the system more stable if I boost up the volt a little? Sharp Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Yeah keep the voltage at 2.7v. Hopefully it is ok but when you get the time let memtest for longer.
decon Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Okay now I've been running with this setup for quite awhile, there' just one problem though and that's that when I have a lot of programs running say firefox, MSN and watching a movie in VLC the screen sometimes goes black if I multitask. It goes black but the audio keeps running and then after 3-5 sec the screen goes back to normal. I've tried to fix this by setting up the voltage to 2,8 but when I do that I can't even boot into windows.
Sharp Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 What power supply do you have and how hot does the PC run at? CPU, Chipset and PWM temps. Got another Gfx card to test with?
decon Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Sorry for the late reply. What app should I use to check the temps.? My PSU is a NorthQ 4001A: # 3.3V: 26A # 5V: 35A # 12V: 15A # Effect for 3.3V and 5V: 240 Watt # Effect for 3.3V, 5V and 12V: 380 Watt # Max effect: 400 Watt No I don't have another gfx to test with
Sharp Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 ITE smart guardian, http://www.dfi.com.tw/Upload/Driver/ITE_SG_050123.zip You need to get a better power supply before it blows up, is it even a 24pin ATX v2.2 one? That may explain your 2.8v issue as this should work without issues on any board/memory module. I would recommend at least 500W, they are much cheaper now but it must be from a reputable brand such as OCZ, Tagan, Corsair, FSP, Hiper, Antec. Might get hold of a 8800Gt while I'm at it anyways. Had the thought that it would be the PSU but I'm the same hardware-geek as I used to be I'll post the temps in just a minute.
