snugglealufacus Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 I'm looking to purchase a new video card (nVidia) to replace my aging 7800 (and to upgrade to DX10 and play bioshock/crysis at close-to-max settings) but im having trouble picking out a good one. my limit is $350 since i'll be paying for half of it (merry x-mas 2 me!) I was wondering if anyone had any good reviews for their video card or would like to help me pick one out. im looking at this evga one right now on newegg. Thanks for any thoughts on the matter! taowulf Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 If Nvidia is what you want, find a 8800GTS 512MB, not the one you listed. Second choice would be a 8800 GT 512MB. Both of these cards are with the new G92 65nm fab and faster than everything but the GTX and Ultra out of the box. That 640MB is the old design. Yukon Trooper Posted December 19, 2007 Posted December 19, 2007 8800GT or GTS (G92). The GTS offers about 10-13% performance increase for 15-20% price increase. This comes from hardwarecanucks who did extensive testing. Could also go for the 3870 if you wanted to save some money. Best bang for your buck card. Hemidare Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 Yeah i went with the xfx 8800gt alpha dog edition and couldnt be happier. Plays crysis on high everything and @ 1280x1024. wevsspot Posted December 20, 2007 Posted December 20, 2007 If it were my money I don't know that I'd spring for the 8800GTS (G92) considering the price difference between it and the regular GT version. Especially considering that some of the GT flavors have quite a bit of overclocking headroom that you can get yourself for free. And I definitely wouldn't spend the money on the 8800GTS 640mb card because frankly, it is out-classed now that the new gpu cores have been released (and I have the 8800GTS 640mb card - I love it, but the new cards blow it away). If I were going to pick between two cards RIGHT now here is how I'd go (in no particular order) nVidia 8800GT 512mb Ati 3870 Now on the surface the 8800GT pretty much smokes the 3870, but consider a couple of things; First . . . Pricing - You can get a 3870 at MotherboardPro.Com right now for as little as $239.00 Second . . . Early reports indicate that with aftermarket cooling (ie Duorb) the 3870 cards have a ton of overclocking headroom. Just my thoughts. I haven't and will never 'pimp' out my 1996 chevrolet cavalier because it is built for what it does best right now: major MPG, not major fart pipes. Then it really comes down to how much money you want to spend. If you've got a deep pocketbook the 8800GTS 512mb card would certainly please you.
