Computer on the wall? CRAZY?

Hey gang,

My son-in-law, who is a civil/electrical engineer, always thinks out of the "box" (Pun intended). Here is his latest.

He has been researching acrylic cases. He wants to build a computer where his 3 year old daughter can see all of the parts; colored led's and all.

His new idea, build a computer that mounts on the wall. No case, just a mobo and all of the components hanging there like a piece of art. Crazy? This is what I want to know. The major drawback that I can see is no way to filter the dust.

Is there a way to do this? I know you guys all search for new ways to push the envelope.

sounds like a nightmare, 3yr old and sensitive electronic equptment with no case! Dont know if mixing these is wise. Drives is easy get a raptor x and use the screws on the bottom that would be awesome on the wall, you would definatly need some kind of protection though for the mobo etc.

he could build an acrylic case around it kind of like a trophy case, just leave an opening above the processor fan if its a top mounted fan. then add some vents around the outside you could probably use some cheesecloth on any vents to keep dust down.

That way the shiny touchy syndrome that many people seem to suffer from and the static charges that are associated with it shouldn't be an issue.

A nightmare for most people. For me definitely, but if his daughter shows interest already in computers, she might also understand "delicate" and "don't touch." By the time she is four  he might teach her to change a video card safely!

At 18 she's a computer engineer!!!!:)

Maybe a wall mounted acrylic display case?

This little girl is absolutely amazing. She can do things with computers that you wouldn't expect until at least 10. By the time she is 4, she will be teaching me things about the computer.

Thanks for all of your answers. I know that I will hear much more. This is the type of out-of-the-box thinking that keeps me coming back to the forum. I knew that I wouldn't just get answers, such as, it can't be done.:)

It's actually been done a couple of times before, that I've seen. If I remember correctly, MNPCTech built one about a year ago when they first opened their studio.

I can also remember seeing one about 3 years ago, but I can't remember what site it was. All I remember is that it was somewhere in Europe!

EDIT: Here's an "industrial" version: LINK

I think you could mount most of the components on a single sheet of plexi. For the CD-Rom and HDD you could use some angle brackets (one side screwed to plexi;other side sticking up). Most HDDs have screws mounts on the bottom so you could actually mount it right to the plexi. For the PSU you could use angle brackets or open it up and screw the bottom of the casing straight to the plexi.

Are you talking about something that is sunk into the actual wall? when you first described it, I was thinking something like a computer put into a hole that has been cut into the wall. then placing a piece of acrylic over it that is set even with the wall. so it is just a viewing window into the computer....if that makes any sense...
